jimmiespipe's Full Review: Destination: Beautiful by Mae (Rock)
Fortunately for Mae, they fall just outside of a doomed genre. This genre, which name changes more than the number of bands that seem to fall beneath it, tends to follow bands which were years ago labeled soft punk.
Understandably that genre label is far beyond most current avid music listeners, in the 90's the genre was renamed Emo, make that late 90's. While band's like weezer were immediately labeled alternative, magazine reviewers fought the ignorant and claimed the flux of musicians with the same overall sound a new genre.
While Mae's sound is anything but revolutionary, it is one of the few bright spots in a genre that has expanded to emo-core and scream-o. But don't be fooled, Beautiful slides easily into the emo catagory. Though in this case fitting in may not be such a bad thing.
Combining original lyrics with intelligent, spacial arrangements, Mae doesn't break ground, but rather mows a lawn that's needed cutting for some time.
In the clogged genre of emo, Mae provides insight into the creativity that inspired music "in the the first place", a line stripped from the albums lead single.
