Pros:Includes One By One; a rare gem
Cons:Should have included the single version of Different Kind of Love song; not a remix
The Bottom Line: Great CD from a great artist. Can't go wrong. Even with Bang Bang and the remix of A Different Kind of Love Song, this cd is still remarkable.
This Greatest Hits package culled songs that Cher performed on her Farewell Tour. There are numerous GH's out there for her, but this one is pretty much the best (in my opinion). It takes the best of her earlier hits (I Got You Babe), her 70s and 80s hits (Take Me Home and If I could Turn Back Time) as well as her biggest hit to date (Believe). Also included are songs from the Living Proof album. But I think the real "deal sealer" here is the inclusion of a minor Hot 100/major Dance hit One By One. The Jr Vasquez remix edit. This song was off her It's A Man's World cd (which pretty much did nothing on the charts). Of course, there is always room for argument as to what should have been on here, what should have been left off etc. A couple of songs that should have been included are We All Sleep Alone and Love and Understanding. But I think overall, the track listing is pretty decent. I'm happy because I can do without those songs anyway.
Below is a track listing of the cd. Let's take a look:
1. Believe - Her late 90s comeback and her biggest hit to date, this Hi-NRG song is nothing short of fabulous. Still sounds great!! Pump this one real loud while driving.
2. If I Could Turn Back Time - A great pop rocker that was off her Heart of Stone album. Every time I hear this song, I keep thinking of the video that was banned on MTV. Kind of hard to believe considering the crap they show on there now.
3. Heart Of Stone - Another great single. Her 4th Top 20 hit from the album of the same name. Sweet melody and her vocals are great.
4. Just Like Jesse James - Cute rocker/country flavor gives this song a nice feel to it. Cher said on tour that she hates this song, but gets requests all the time to perform it, so she did it...one last time.
5. Save Up All Your Tears - This was her 2nd single from the Love Hurts album. I LOVE this song!! A mid to uptempo rocker that will have you singing along with it.
6. After All - (with Peter Cetera) - A great ballad with 2 great voices. Cher and Peter Cetera (from Chicago). This song was included on the Heart of Stone album and is from the movies Chances Are. These 2 voices compliment each other on a really sweet melodious ballad.
7. I Found Someone - A song written by Michael Bolton (and originally covered by Laura Branigan a couple of years back). This was Cher's "first" comeback hit for the 80s. A mid to uptempo power rocker that has Cher telling her ex-lover that she doesn't need him anymore cause she found someone else.
8. One By One - (Junior Vasquez Vocal Edit) - Now THIS is what I'm talking about!! This song is GREAT!! Especially the remix, which is included here. This is a song that was not on any other GH. A real good housey type dance song that will have your toes tapping. If you need ONE reason to buy this GH, it's this song.
9. Strong Enough - Another song pulled from the Believe album. This was her follow up to that song. I remember reading a review on this song when it first came out stating that this was going to be the anthem of the 90s ala I Will Survive. Unfortunately, it wasn't. Another Hi-NRG dance song that has Cher telling her lover she has moved on and doesn't need him.
10. All Or Nothing - 3rd and final single release from the Believe cd. This is pretty much Believe Pt 2, but I still love this song. A nice Hi-NRG Euro-dance song that showcases Cher's vocals very nicely
11. Song For The Lonely - First release taken from the Living Proof CD. This uptempo Hi-NRG song was dedicated to the firemen and police officers that worked incredibly hard and long on September 11th. The video is really cool. This song should have went higher on the charts.
12. Take Me Home - Ahhh...Cher's disco days. This song is INCREDIBLE. For anyone that LOVES disco, they know this song by heart. I could have used the full length version, but no matter...This song is still awesome!
13. Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss), The - Another song from a movie. This was from Mermaids, in which Cher starred. This remake is cute and I love the way she did it. Uptempo, poppy and fun!!
14. All I Really Want To Do - A blast from the past. A cute song from the 60s. Can hardly tell it's Cher singing.
15. Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) - One of my least favorite songs, but a hit is a hit. Of course, this song has to be included on every GH that comes out.
16. Half Breed - Another hit from Cher's 70s decade. Great song about her growing up and being ridiculed for being multi-racial.
17. Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves - This was one of Cher's biggest hits (until Believe came along). Good song and her voice sounds great.
18. Dark Lady - Now this is one of my favorite Cher classics. I remember this song on her variety show when they showed the little cartoon clip of the blond going to see the Gypsy woman. Great song (and I love the ending!!!)
19. Beat Goes On, The - Sonny & Cher - One of Cher's hits with her hubby Sonny. Cute song...Very dated, though.
20. I Got You Babe - Sonny & Cher - All artists have a signature song, and this one has got to be S&C's. Great song and every time I hear it, I think of them together on Letterman. Excellent song
21. Different Kind Of Love Song, A - (Rodney Jenkins main mix) - Ok, this is where I have the problem. If anyone has read ANY of my reviews, they can tell by now that I love dance music, but I could have done without this mix/version. The original version is 100% better and would have been a better representation of the Living Proof album (from which it's from) and would have fit better alongside the rest of the current batch of songs. A minor flaw though.
So, there you have it folks. A really decent Greatest Hits from an artist who really deserves a box set. But until that day comes, this will do nicely. Packaging is pretty cool too (especially the cover...although I like a brunette Cher more)
Go out and get this CD!! You won't be disappointed. I wasn't.
