Take a Walk Witt Me while I review Sheek's debut
Written: Sep 22 '03 (Updated Sep 22 '03)
Pros:DBlock Appearances, Occasional Introspective Lyrics, Some Creative Punchlines
Cons:Too Many Punchline Rhymes, Some Disappointing Production, Filler
The Bottom Line: Anyone who has been any type of Lox fan over the years must get this.
Sheek Louch, one third of hip-hop group The Lox. Of all three members to me Sheek Louch has comes off as the most one dimensional. Sheek's punchline raps seem to play back up to Jadakiss's star power and Styles P's gangsta. Sheek Louch now drops his debut solo album Walk Witt Me, on his own record label D-Block distributed through Universal. For those wondering The Lox are stull Ruff Ryders, and there is no beef between Double R and D-Block. D-Block consisting of The Lox(Jadakiss, Styles & Sheek) and Jae Hood have been all over mixtapes lately promoting D-Black and Walk Witt Me. The first single off of Walk Witt Me is Mighty D-Block known on the mixtape circuit as 2 Gunz up. It seems every week there is a new D-Block mixtape whether is DJ Kool Kid, Whoo Kid, DJ Ron G, Cutmaster C, or Supa Mario(D-Block's apparent DJ) they are taking the route that 50 Cent took before he blew up, by getting on any and all mixtapes and spitting more sh!t than Lenny Dykstra.
1. For You - $$$ - This starts off with a pretty lazy beat with some piano play in the background. Sheek spits a verse full of punchlines mixed with some gangsta speak. He talks a bit about his past with Puff, Biggie and Badboy. At the end of the song Sheek smacks the DJ for stopping the beat.
2. Ok - $$ - The beat on this track is pretty average produced by Cocoa Chanelle. Sheek spits some rhymes, laced with a gangsta theme. Lyrically he isn't too bad on this track, but he doesn't spit anything spectacular. The chorus is just mad annoying however. In his last verse Sheek raps about the club scene and people hating on him. It seems that he doesn't even finish the verse however. This is a club track full of commercial sh!t.
3. Turn it Up - $$$ - Alchemist dropped this beat for Sheek. The bass is sure to test the subwoofers in your car or home sterio, however this beat is kind of disappointing. If you are a fan of metaforic punchline rap you will love this track. The beat is kind of clubbish and Sheek spits some bar full of punchlines and most of them are actually pretty good.
4. How Many Guns - $$$$1/2 - We gets some quick violins mixed with some tight synthesizer effects and it sounds really tight when it picks up every 8 bars. Sheek rocks the mic like a heavyweight champ. Spittin the fire about thuggin and just the every day doings of a thug. Pretty commercial but Sheek's punchlines and his flow actually help that out. The chorus is gangsta and pretty tight, sure to be a hit with any and all Lox fans.
5. In/Out(S.P.) (feat. Styles P) - $$$$ - This song starts out with a message on a phone. This has a dark piano driven beat with some hard bass and some quick harp strings at the end of every 4 bars. The track title is exactly how Sheek and SP spit on this track, as after every two bars they go back and forth and it is sick. The chorus however is trash and really annoying. Sheek spits a bunch of punchlines and they are tight. Styles really shines here spittin his usual over-gangsta rhymes with some violent punchlines.
Styles
"And I can make the best die/
Cut ya throat open, pull ya tongue thru it, thats a f!ckin necktie"
6. I ain't Forget - $$$$$ - This song starts with a pretty slow beat. On this track Sheek sums up the situation of him, D-Block, Ruff Ryders and the Lox in the past few years. In my opinion this is when Louch is at his best, not when he is spitting punchlines. He tells about, how he wasn't with all the Shiny suit type of sh!t back when they was with Bad Boy. How he was at home when they joined up with Ruff Ryders. He talks about Jadakiss's album and how the hood thought it was moist and he tells how Styles P's promotion was weak. He tells how he never had solo plans until he dropped a freestyle. He also shouts out all the mixtape DJ's who helped him out.
7. Walk Witt Me - $$$$$($$) - The production on this track is pretty weak, we get some soft humming, and a slow plodding piano. Sheek absolutely kills it though and makes up for any short-comings the beat may have. He spits some introspective hood life situations, of a brother on his down and outs. He talks about how we don't need these racial problems. He tells how the great Malcomb X and Martin Luther King should still be alive. He tells of the possibilities of a black face on a dollar bill. He keeps hope alive in which there are not death penalties and abortions. He tells the women out there to cover up esp whe they got lil' daughters will will only grow up to be like them. He then realizes he may be asking for too much. He dreams of waking up and there are no murders on the 5'OClock news, no more kid gettin killed over the newest Jordan kicks. He dreams a place where we don't value money, just the air we breathe. A place where there are no more beers, liquor, no more wars, fights, jails, no more stocks, or shares. He then again says he know it could never happen and he just rappin and dreamin. This is going in as one of my top 10 songs of the year without a doubt.
8. Crazzy - $ - We open up with a skit in which a man is at Louch's door claiming to be a pizza man. None of Sheeks peeps ordered pizza, so they leave around back and come to the front and shoot the guy up...Then when Sheek and them come back Styles ask where his pizza at because he ordered it. Tight intro and that is where this track should have ended instead, the beat jumps in and commercial dribble is strong in this one. The beat feel way over-produced. Sheek spits lines full of punchlines which aren't even that good. The chorus sound like Sheek trying to do some type of Reggae sh!t and he fails miserably. "Bling, Bling, Whats that?, Sheek Louch is back, Ride, Ride, You got my back?, where the heaters at?, 12 gauge tek 9's, Yo where to hit him at?, D-Block we got em goin Crazzy, Crazzy"...This is one of the worst chorus's i've ever heard...FILLER
"I use big words like SUCK MY D!CK"...Ehhh
9. Ten Hut(feat. Jadakiss) - $$$1/2 - This starts up with Sheek rapping over a military drummer boy beat full of horns. Sheek spits some punchline heavy rhymes. After a "Ready, Aim Fire" Jadakiss rips into the track. He talks about how he and Sheek are back and that Styles is probably doing push-ups right now. In the last verse Kiss and Sheek both spit some gangsta rhymes and Sheek talks about how he made a come up.
10. How I Love You(feat. Styles P) - $$$$1/2 - In this track Sheek puts his balls behind him and admits that he is in love. So of course this is a song to the love of his life. He tell about how she was in a Run DMC video and she was too big to may him any mind. Styles P handles the chorus along with a "How I Love You" sample in the background and it is perfect. He tells how when he first meet her she wanted to mess with all three of them. At the end of the song he yells "I aint gonna lie to y'all, I'm whipped"...J-Zone would certainly frown on this pimpotance.
11. 354(Tarrentino) - $$$$1/2 - Sheek spits a story on this track. He tells of him and the boys just hustling. He find some brother outside with a hoodie on. Sheek cocks his hammer and walks up to him, to see why he out there. He goes to talk to the guy, to see whats up. The guys plays it innocent, until the spot gets shot up. In the confusion they Jamaicans think that Sheek and them did it, and everything gets crazy from then on.
12. Don't Mean Nuthin - $$$ - All of D-Block is featured on this track. Styles opens up and spit some bullets to anyone hating on him, letting you know he will kill you. Man SP is a violent mutha. The chorus is just straight hard. Jae Hood does what he does best and surprise he doesn't even make a J-Rock/South Central referance in this one. Everyone applaud. No really Hood kills this with some tight metaforic punchlines. Jadakiss comes up next and spits a pretty average gangsta verse. Sheek's verse is full of punchlines as usual. This song has that commercial gangster type of vibe to it, but it isn't really that bad.
13. DBlock(feat. Jae Hood) - $$ - Sheek opens up on a slow caribean type of beat. Sheek raps his usual punchlines. Jae Hood comes up and spits a punchlines filled verse. I swore I heard him spit the "Make it smoke, like exhaust pipes" line on a mixtape. Jae Hood is on the chorus giving us a "Deeeee Bloooock" chant reminiscene of Nas's Made You Look "BraaaaaaveHearttttts"...Filler, why the hell have two DBlock songs? They should of kept this one off.
14. Mighty DBlock(feat. The Lox & Jae Hood) - $$$1/2 - This is the lead single and you've probably heard it. Green Lantern produced, it starts out with a marching beat and drumming in the background with some hard bass. Jada's opening singing is mad annoying. Jadakiss Spits some commercial gangster lyrics. The chorus has each rapper stating thier name and sounding off. Sheek spits the punchlines. The beat changes opting for much more drums when Jae Hood steps up. He spits some pretty tight punchlines. After Hood comes Styles and he spits some punchlines also, and also talks about the streets.
This album really blew away my expectations. I haven't been a fan of the punchline Sheek, and I was expecting a purely garbage album. Sheek however does a good job with his punchlines and even gives us some insightful songs that many a hip-hop head are sure to love. I never thought that out of each Lox members solo albums, that i'd like Sheek's the most. If you are a Lox fan you should go gets this for sure. If you aren't sure if you wanna shell out money for Sheek, I would suggest you to do so even though you may find yourself disappointed according to your tastes. How even I like this and would recommend it to anyone.
