First - your observation that I did not explain my comparison to Nothing Like The Sun is valid - I will remove the reference.

Second, I believe that I did explain world music influences sufficiently:

There is a new world of music expressed in this song; flamenco guitars introduce the song (this intro is not heard in the radio edit), oriental strings and sitar swirl through the hook, and the song launches into a techno-pop trance (with a dash of Steve Miller for the observant)...

Cello, sitar, and eastern percussion flavor the pages of The Book Of My Life...

more and more world music elements are finding their way into Sting's repertoire, but they are not just thrown in for flavor. Each instrument has a voice; there are myriad beliefs and vibrant cultures associated with sitars and strings, and flamenco guitars and castanets, among others, and they are all used to support each song they appear in...

not gonna argue about the three bonus tracks on "You Still Touch Me", which I reviewed here:

http://www.epinions.com/content_81542155908

The Pirates Bride is one of his best songs ever.

And regarding your thoughts on Sacred Love, well, I can't say that I agree, but to each his own. Though, I find it strange that you love his earlier work, and can't find more to like about this one - I think that this one is very similar to ,Nothing Like The Sun.

Anyway, thanks for the comments!

O Music, Where is They Sting? (Reply to this comment)

I've long considered myself a top-tier Sting fanatic (dating back to the early 1980's). People know me as "That Guy Who's Really Into Sting."

I scooped this one up the day it was released in the States. And, with much sadness, I don't dig it.

The first track really works for me. And track 4 is fast becoming enjoyable. But, overall I'm disappointed. (I can't believe I'm saying that! About Sting!)

The Maxi-CD Single of "You Still Touch Me" was a better album. Those three bonus tracks (B-sides for you old schoolers) were all incredible. Four great tunes. He was batting 1.000.

Now, he may as well play for the Detroit Tigers...

I'm late! What a fantastic review. By far, my favorite Sting solo work to date has been Nothing Like the Sun. I've been waiting for him to get back to that place ever since. So clearly I must own this album. Again, fabulous write up - I'm off to the disc-o-rama :)

Oleg - Thanks for the review of the review! I always appreciate your viewpoint on Sting albums - just because we're both crazy fans of Sting's doesn't mean we have to agree on everything. It's nice to have these little debates without having any petty fanclub arguments (ever read kristina's review of O-Town latest album? they came out in droves to flame her for that one) find it here:

http://www.epinions.com/content_80736718468

The Book Of My Life is a nice enough song; I guess I'm just a cynic at heart sometimes. I might eventually change my mind about it, but I gave my honest opinion at the time. Sometimes these songs take a while to really sink in... I remember that it took me forever to really appreciate Billy Joel's Storm Front, but now I love that album.

I don't think that I will be leaving epinions for some time now - what happened earlier this year is that work became very hectic, my family was still adjusting to our move to Texas, and epinions was one of those things I couldn't justify spending much time on. Things have calmed down somewhat, and I find that I have some time to put out the occasional review.

As for Sting reviews, there is plenty of related material left - I haven't touched any of The Police discography, and I do want to review other musicians too (My musical tastes aren't limited to Sting you know - collective gasp from peanut gallery) It was nice to be able to complete the Sting studio album series.

PS. loved the Hysteria review - now go check your title on POUR some sugar on me : )

Sorry, it again took too long. Here goes!

First off, great job. I may have beaten you to submitting it, but you have beaten me by the strength of the review itself. I wanted to be as thorough.. but my schedule is a hell.. lastly, I wanted to review it as fast as possible.

:)

Some reflections:

The more I hear it the more I come to thinking that in 'Dead Man's Rope' Sting addresses Jesus. I think so..

I have to (you won't be surprised;) strongly disagree on 'Book of my Life' - it might be a commercial.. maybe, only maybe. But overall it's not only a beautiful song, it's like.. he wrote about his mistakes and fears, and that in the end all that matters is Her. No, I can't see how it can be a commercial. It's a typical Sting song, where he finds love the only reason.. this time - for his existence. And, like with every Sting song, there's something in it everyone can relate to.. check out the following lines

There are promises broken and promises kept
Angry words that were spoken, when I should have wept
There's a chapter of secrets, and words to confess
If I lose everything that I possess
There's a chapter on loss and a ghost who won't die
There's a chapter on love where the ink's never dry
There are sentences served in a prison I built out of lies

and the following is simply amazing

There are tales of good fortune that couldn't be planned
There's a chapter on God that I don't understand
There's a promise of Heaven and Hell but I'm damned if I see

Think about how many people can relate to that!

in 'Forget about the Future', I think Sting rather is sarcastic about a lady who does not see that he still loves her, than sings a song of a man who wants too much (not what she needs now). Afer all, the lines

Let's just forget about the future
And get on with the past

..not only clearly point back at 'Heavy Cloud no Rain', but also seem to make the message clear enough - SHE's living in the past now. "The past" being probably the way they've been living for the last couple of years, after something had died. There's rather a lesson on "why there's not enough love in a marriage" than "husbands, you'd better learn to better understand your wifes". Which is not a bad thing, considering it indeed is all about human sexuality..

Or so I see it :))

Anyways, I loved your review. It was a pleasure to disagree on some places, but ain't that a good thing? You did a great job, my friend!! Would be a pity if you stopped reviewing music now, your style and love for music are too precious.. and fit nicely in this funny place.

Can't wait for your new reviews!

And, see ya very very soon

The "world music"definitely does NOT take over the album - these songs are firmly Sting's. The world sounds are put to very effective use, and help to add to the feeling that this exploration of the subject is being made by humanity, not just Sting - or maybe I'm just reading way too much into this.

I have not heard his son's music, but would be very interested in hearing it.

Thanks for the comments!

I'm not sure I _want_ his world-music to be too authentic, but from "Send Your Love" (great single) he seems to be stopping at the Graceland level of cross-bred authenticity, and that does sound good. I mean, it's definitely good having him learn the cultures behind his instruments, as long as there's some part of him stubbornly being Sting - which I gather is the case. Intriguing writeup.

Have you heard his son's band, by any chance? If so, what's it like?

curiously,
- Brian
