den_inte_dod's Full Review: Hate Crew Deathroll by Children Of Bodom
Children of Bodom are an extremely talented band from Finland. That is the bottom line, and in 2003, they made their grand release of Hate Crew Deathroll. Is it better than their previous albums? You bet. There are many qualities that Hate Crew Deathroll has that the others don't, such as Alexi's vocals. Their music as a whole has improved a lot. It is overall the best C.o.B. album that has been released yet, unless their upcoming release Are You Dead Yet? proves me wrong. Boy, I can't wait. Anyways, I suppose I should focus on what this album sounds like, for now...
CHILDREN OF BODOM? THAT SOUNDZ SCRY!!!!1111

The album blasts off with an amazing song that has one of the best intros I've ever heard. "Needled 24/7" begins with keyboards blasting into your ears, followed by a guitar solo from the one and only Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho. He also sets things off with a scream , and after a few more powerful screams, he begins singing similar to Dave Mustaine of Megadeth. The chorus is among the greatest parts of the song, and another flawless part is the keyboarding solo that is after the chorus. Jaska refuses to slow down his drumming one bit, and he is indeed a very fast drummer. Alexi performs a marvelous guitar solo toward the end of the song.
"Bodom Beach Terror" begins with a short drum solo, and before you know it, the rest of the band is playing the same tune. Keyboardist Janne Warman makes things interesting by putting in high pitched blasts of the keyboards along with the music, making it somewhat similar to music from a Nightwish song. The music is very capable of getting stuck in your head for the rest of the day, but it isn't a bad thing at all because it is wonderful. Alexi tends to scream the title of the song somewhere in the chorus of most Children of Bodom songs, and he does scream "Bodom Beach Terror!" at the end of each chorus. There is a stupendous guitar solo just before the end of the song, and all music fades away. When there is silence, Alexi calmly mutters,
"My pain is constantly sharp.
I do not hope for a better world for anyone
In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others"
"Angels Don't Kill" begins with calm, mystical keyboards, then gradually starts to get heavier after Alexi performs a roar with much force. When he starts to sing, you can tell that in this album instead of screaming most of the time, he sings very powerful. This is a beautiful song, one of my favorites on the album, and it is one of those that you just wish to sing along to. Before each chorus, there is a deep roar done by Alexi, one that you would also wish to attempt, but it may be difficult. Later, there is a guitar solo performed by Alexi that makes you feel as if you are seeing them live.
Speaking of the greatest songs on the album, this one is definitely in the top three. "You're Better Off Dead" launches with a very heavy intro, and gets even better when Alexi does a scream that is wonderful to start songs off with. That is another thing you may notice, that he starts things off very often with screams going "ALRIGHT!!!!" or "YEAAAOW!!". There is yet another flawless guitar solo performed by Alexi, followed by back up vocals that are included in the chorus. "Lil Bloodred Ridin' Hood" triggers with Alexi yelling, then the heavy music explodes with much fury. This would be one of those songs that would be a really track to perform live, and I'm betting that they do at most of their shows. It would seem to get the crowd to go insane, which I'm sure that Children of Bodom would want. It then wraps up as the final guitar riff becomes silence.
