Background Info:
I have been a fan of Mark Wills the past 5 years or so. I think he is a great singer and has recorded some songs that have really moved me. He is known for singing mostly ballads, but here recently has came out with a couple of really fun songs. One of those songs, And the Crowd Goes Wild can be found on this album. I remember the first time I heard that song. I thought it sounded like the stupidest thing I had ever heard. I couldn't believe that it was on country radio because it does not sound country. The more I heard it though it grew on me. I ended up buying the CD just because I love that song. When I bought the CD it was the only song that I knew on there. I knew that since it was Mark Wills there would be other songs I would enjoy so I got it. I was right.
This album debuted at #5 on the charts. It was released in October 2003. It is his 6th album to date. From the CD there have been two singles released: And the Crowd Goes Wild and That's a Woman.
The songs on the CD:
1. And the Crowd Goes Wild (Jeffrey Steele & Craig Wiseman)
2. He's a Cowboy (Dan Couch, Craig Wiseman & P.J. Smith)
3. That's a Woman (Steven Dale Jones & Rivers Rutherford)
4. Prisoner of the Highway (duet w/ Ronnie Milsap) (Mike Reid)
5. What Hurts the Most (Jeffrey Steele & Steve Robson)
6. What She Sees in Me (Chuck Jones & Jimmie Ritchey)
7. Married in Mexico (Cory Mayo & Trey Bruce)
8. Nothin' But a Suntan (James Slater)
9. How Bad Do You Want It (Tony Martin, Tom Shapiro & Mark Nesler)
10. I Just Close My Eyes (Chris Lindsey, Bill Luther & Aimee Mayo)
11. Singer in a Band (Tim Meny & Gary Harrison)
And the Crowd Goes Wild is a cool song. It is fun and upbeat. It doesn't sound country, but is still great. It makes me feel like dancing. My kids love to sing with it at the top of their lungs. The song is about a NASCAR driver and then about a singer. Mark sounds like he is having a lot of fun when he says: "And the crow goes wild - And the crowd goes wild - You're Shinin' like a superstar, baby - And the crowd goes wild" The crowd really does go wild and you can hear them loud on this song.
He's a Cowboy tells a story. It starts off about a little six year old girl, Jenny, whose father left when she was one. Her friends ask about him and she lies and tells them "He's a cowboy ridin' the range". As a teenager she dreams of a cowboy to be her man. Then after she marries her husband leaves when her little boy was one. She looks out the window and sees "Her little man's runnin' 'round back with a stick horse and a little red hat" and she knows that Jenny knows that she finally got her cowboy.
That's a Woman is a slow song. It is about a man in love with his middle aged woman who he has been with for a long time. She has a touch of gray in her hair and doesn't always have time for makeup, but she "makes a king out of a common man".
Prisoner of the Highway is a duet with Ronnie Milsap. Mark always dreamed of singing with Ronnie and his dream came true with this song. It's a fast paced song about a truck driver and his life on the road.
What Hurts the Most is an emotional song. It deals with the pain of losing someone that you truly love.
What She Sees in Me is one of my favorite songs. It is about 3 people that see wonderful things in this man. His mama always sees nothing but the best. His wife loves him even though he is an average man who does "honest work with calloused hands." Then it tells of a little girls love for her Daddy. This is a really moving song. It's the way I feel about my husband.
Married in Mexico is meant as a fun song about love. I didn't really care for this one. It's about a guy with 2 plane tickets, a ring and wanting to get married in Mexico.
Nothin' But a Suntan is a sexual song. "Man that girl is so fine - She just blows my mind - All she does is smile - It gets my motor runnin'". She doesn't have to have designer clothes because she is hot to him "when she's wearing nothin' but a suntan".
How Bad Do You Want It was another song that I didn't really care for. It tells a story of a couple of guys who play at a bar. Then one that goes off to the big time while the other guy gets the waitress in the bar they played it. It does have an awesome guitar in the middle of the song.
I Just Close My Eyes is about the life of a guy on the road and the pain he goes through missing his family. I bet this song is something that is really how Mark feels in his real life.
A Singer in a Band is another one of my favorite songs. It is a very touching and emotional song. It's about a guy who is a singer, but he doesn't want people to think he is a hero because he is "just a singer in a band". He points out the real heroes in life are the everyday people: the little girl with cancer, the single mom working overtime, the New York City firemen and cops who laid down their lives and the soldier in a field of mines. I thought this song was awesome and really moved me.
Conclusion:
Mark Wills has yet to disappoint me. Most of the songs on this album deserve a listen. I have many different emotions listening to it. Some of the songs are fast, upbeat and fun. Others are slow ballads that talk about real life stuff. They tell a story; they talk about love and heartbreak.
The CD insert includes the lyrics to all of the songs, which I love. That is so helpful when you are learning new songs and really wanting to get to know them.
Country fan or not And The Crowd Goes Wild by Mark Wills would be a nice addition to your music collection.
