No doubt, you'll find all the No Doubt you need right here.
Written: Nov 25 '03
Pros:It's No Doubt - no need to tell you every track is good.
Cons:They're in the wrong order.
The Bottom Line: You can't go wrong with No Doubt's greatest hits. After all, it's No Doubt.
Unless you've been living under a rock for the last 10 years, you know No Doubt and at least a few of their songs. It was only a matter of time before the band released a collection of these songs, and this came about November of 2003 with The Singles 1992 - 2003.
Everything you need to know is right there in the title. All the singles they've released, one disc. Woo.
Now, I'm not a hardcore No Doubt fan, but I do have all of their albums from Tragic Kingdom and on, so I wasn't exactly getting anything new from this disc, but I decided to give it a listen anyway.
The Singles pretty much covers everything No Doubt you need: From the self titled first album, we have Trapped In A Box, the band's first single, which is pure ska. Their breakthrough album, Tragic Kingdom, is represented by the massive hit, Don't Speak, and the great songs, Spiderwebs, Just A Girl, Excuse Me Mr., and Sunday Morning. The pink-dawned Stefani album, Return Of Saturn, gets nods from the punky Ex-Girlfriend, the rocky beat of Bathwater, the dance-influenced New, and the beautiful Simple Kind Of Life. And finally, Rock Steady is represented by reggae-influenced Hey Baby and Underneath It All, as well as the dance smash Hella Good and the sweet ballad Running. The disc also includes a new single, It's My Life, a psuedo 80s cover.
There's no denying all of these songs are good - it's No Doubt, after all, and for new fans, it's definitely something to introduce you to what a great band you've been missing.
There is one major problem I have with this collection though: the order. Maybe I'm a little bit anal about this, but I believe a greatest hits CD should be in chronological order - it really shows the growth of the band. I'm not sure how these songs are arranged. It seems like someone put it on shuffle and just let it go. Therefore, when listening to it straight through, you go from dance to pop to rock to ska to ballad, all in 15 minutes. It's quite hard to keep up. It would be ideal if they glided through era after era of this ever changing band, but instead they just threw them together in a shoddy pile.
Other than that, it's no doubt (ha... haha) that this collection is good. After all, all these songs were huge successes, and no matter what styling of music they choose to do, No Doubt is a fantastic band. It's all the songs you know and love. Hopefully you have a programmer on your CD player so you can put these in some sort of order, but otherwise, you really can't ask for more.
