I'm one of those people who always thought Cyndi Lauper had a phenomenal voice. Hers is a voice of an artist as much as it is the voice of a singer and on her latest CD "At Last" she shows us both.
"At Last" Cyndi shows off the power of her voice. She makes you want to share a quiet smile as you share in the joy of someone who has finally found the soul mate that they have been searching for their entire lives.
"Walk On By" - This heartbreaking rendition makes you wonder how this song could have been done any other way. Another reviewer criticized the song as being "tentative and frightened". And it is, in parts of the song, but that is what makes this a work of art rather than just another cover tune. You hear the heartbreak, you hear the voice that can barely contain the pain. The rasp in her voice on this song that works so well on some of her other songs becomes grating and annoying. Luckily the rest of the album makes up for it. Skip this track and the album is heaven.
"Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" - Another highlight for me. This is the song I'll skip to if I have time to listen to just one song from the CD. The songs starts quietly but she builds it up and pulls it back at all the right places. If they ever release a single from this CD, this should be it...
