cheshirechris's Full Review: 2 Become 1 [Single] by Jewel
2 Become 1 kicks off the 04, of 0304.
"2 Become to 1", the third American released single (excluding the two previous maxi singles) from Jewel's forth album, "0304" has landed in stores, with continued promise from America's favorite Alaskan turned sex symbol.
Jewel Kilcher put down her guitar in favor of makeup brushes, and hook earrings when putting together her latest album, titled "0304", representing her growth in the years 2003-2004. The bubbly pop singer with signature crooked teeth made a physical transformation, when she came back as a cross between 80's fashion, and Christina Aguilera's sexuality. Tube tops, neon bracelets, and lyrics about Charlie Sheen, made Jewel's forth album the best selling of any of her previous records.
Fresh off of the hits, "Intuition" and "Stand", comes the third single, "2 Become 1". Unlike the two singles before it, this one doesn't come packaged with sexuality on the cover, or a hot pink or neon yellow disc. A modest white disc inside a white and creme case, with a simply made-up Kilcher come instead. It's almost a step backward in the look of Jewel, something that could be expected from "Spirit", her sophomore album.
Tracklist:
1. 2 Become 1
2. Sweet Temptation
Buyers should be aware that this is the American release of the single, containing only two tracks, the single, and an "0304" b-side, not the Australian import single, or the maxi-single of dance remixes. This two track version will be the most easy to obtain in the United States.
Why to buy?
Why not? It's cheap. Anywhere you find it, it's almost certain that the cost of the disc will be less than four dollars, for two songs. Wavering on Jewel? Not sure about "0304"? The third single proves as a great chance for listeners to hear another hit song, while getting a taste of the music that won't be released for radio airplay. A taste of what you'll be getting, and a taste of what you won't - unless you have the full length album.
"2 Become 1" is a somewhat sappy love song, nothing as deep and emotion filled as previous Jewel love tunes "You Were Meant For Me" or "This Way". Here, Kilcher's basically saying that she's in love, and although she fears that love can be fragile, she feels as if she's part of her lover, and no longer standing alone. A chorus of "Love, do not make a sound. Melt into me now. 2 becomes 1. Love, let's make time stand still. Let this moment last until 2 become 1" asks for help that her love will no change, that she can remain in the moment, filled with her current emotions, until she's able to handle more. Something sweet, painless, and not too deep that much thought is required to process the meaning, unlike some Jewel tracks.
"Sweet Temptation", the track that follows the title track on the single, works well with "2 Become 1" because of the fact that both songs are up tempo, fast paced, and with beats that make people feel like dancing. "When you fall into me, it feel so sweet like dreaming. Press yourself into me, lemme feel your breathing", rings out as almost an extension of the track before it, making for a solid listening experience that isn't choppy or awkwardly placed together. Quite possibly, the boldest and deepest comment on the entire nine minutes of music, rings out as "Your flesh, your skin, is the only flag there is to believe in". What else could be said?
Why not to buy?
If you have the album "0304", and don't collect Jewel singles, discs, or anything of the sort - pass this over. You're getting nothing new. Both tracks are taken directly from the album, no changes, no remixes, no extensions. If you enjoy the song, but don't want to pay four dollars for only two tracks, I'd advise holding out, and buying the entire album for only about eight dollars more. The full length of the "2 Become 1" single is only roughly nine minutes, whereas the album is almost a solid hour.
Otherwise, I'd advise you to pick it up. It's a refreshing song, and a refreshing look on the cover. Jewel might be putting down those hotpants, after all.
