Pros: Unique brand of comedy, short jokes about random things.
Cons: Great, great stuff, but not for everyone. A few people may not like it.
The Bottom Line: Mitch is like the guy everyone knows that comes up with random things spontaneously. If you haven't heard him, you owe it to yourself to check him out.
othersider's Full Review: Strategic Grill Locations [PA] by Mitch Hedberg
Perhaps some people may call this comparison overly dramatic in light of his recent untimely passing, but I think in hindsight, Mitch Hedberg kinda reminds me of Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. Many people have said they think Nirvana was still very early in their careers and could have gone on to much more success. It's debatable, of course, but I think the same could be said of Mitch Hedberg. What little we've heard from him so far has brought laughter to so many people, one can only imagine what else he had in store for us.
But, I digress. This is supposed to be a review of Mitch Hedberg's CD Strategic Grill Locations, so I will try to stay on the topic. This is the earlier of two recorded shows from Mitch that have been released on CD, and in a nutshell, it's very funny but also shows great potential. Mitch had very few peers, I think - his brand of comedy was quite rare; he doesn't tell stories, doesn't rant and rave about issues, doesn't ask the audience "Didja ever notice?" ...instead, he spews out random comments, hypothetical situations, and interesting interpretations, one after the other, often changing the subject suddenly and drastically.
Mitch's brand of comedy isn't for everyone, though. Some people may find his lack of focus befuddling. Some may not accept Mitch's delivery style, since he often sounds like he's not completely sober, and mumbles intermittently. Some may be put off by the profanity he spices his thoughts with - which I can understand, but I think can use some explanation. Mitch doesn't attack lots of people or things, and he doesn't use profanity any more than the average person probably would when expressing the same sentiments if they occurred to him or her. Many fans of Mitch aren't bothered by this at all, but I can see how this might deter some people.
I think the best way to see if you'd like Mitch's comedy is probably just to give you some examples. A typical joke goes something like this:
"I asked this guy for directions to the store. He said, 'Oh, that's just a hop, skip and a jump away.' Well...that ain't how I'm getting there. You got any directions for those who are walking?"
then, of course, he'd suddenly change the subject and say something like:
"I tried to laugh all the way to the bank, but my bank was too far. I need a closer bank, or a funnier joke."
Lots of people thought he was hilarious. I did. Hopefully, you will too. This CD is the perfect place to discover a different, hilarious reason to laugh.
