Dark Lotus's Black Rain Falls Indoors & Outside

Written: Apr 13 '04 (Updated Feb 12 '08)
Pros:New beats give the album a rap/hiphop feel
Cons:Songs like Doornail Dorothy & My 1st Time a bit more graphic than usual
The Bottom Line: Good sequel to Tales From The Lotus Pod, most appealing to juggalos.

Dark Lotus - Black Rain is the third release by this underground rap group, following the original album Tales From The Lotus Pod, and it's re-release the follow year. Dark Lotus is yet another combined force of artists from within the Psychopathic Record family. Insane Clown Posse, Twiztid, Blaze Ya Dead Homie and Anybody Killa are the four main groups found within Dark Lotus. Each group as individuals have their own unique style and lyric contents, however, combined as Dark Lotus, their sound is dark, eerie, and in general horrific. Dark Lotus can be a turn off for some hardcore juggalos because the contents of the songs refer to killing, death, suicide, and various activities with body bodies. Insane Clown Posse and Twiztid tend to touch of these subjects but not as in-depth as Dark Lotus does. Tales From The Lotus Pod was rather graphic but Black Rain goes one step further down the road of necrophilia.

It's no surprise that Dark Lotus doesn't produce their own music, however, the themes used in Black Rain are more rap/hiphop based similar to their counter parts Psychopathic Rydas.

The majority of the songs refer to in some way or another killing women, having fascinations with their body, and somehow disposing of it after the festivities are over. These types of songs are a huge turn off because they go into too much detail and are very graphic. Obviously it's the nature of Dark Lotus to sing about these topics, but at some point it just goes to far, even for normal juggalos. However Dark Lotus has always said it's just for show, nothing they ever produce is meant to be taken seriously.

One of the more sexual songs is Doornail Dorothy. In a similar twist from a song off their previous album called "And We Danced", Doornail Dorothy is about a dead rotting ghost who roams around the neighborhood looking for sex. Sure enough Violent J & Shaggy take up the offer with pants open and meats dangling. Lyric: "I took the ropes off and bent her right over the washer, it took a little time cause body parts kept falling off her, I banged her fxcking neden til her head fell off, picked it right back up so I could bust off in her mouth".

She Was is another graphic song dealing with rejection and the killing of a blind date. It's been done before, so it's not really any new material we haven't heard before. Lyric: "She was alive when I got there, dead when I left, I shut her throat down squeezed all the air outta her neck, she fought back scared with a deep fear in here eyes until they rolled into the back of her head as she died".

Not all of Dark Lotus is so graphic and disturbing as shown in Black Rain, That's Me, Consume Your Soul, Corrosion, Jump-Off, Death Don't Want You. This grouping of songs basically deals with darkness, being alone depressed and general thoughts about life and death. Again the lyric content shown throughout are nothing new, they are similar to the contents found on Tales From The Lotus Pod, specifically "Headache" "I Hurt Myself" and "I Wanna Die".

Overall I'd say Black Rain is not a bad album. There are quite a few negatives in dealing with the killings and necrophilia, but that's what everyone has come to expect from Insane Clown Posse & Twiztid. For some these topics are just wrong, but most juggalos would agree that nothing is to be taken seriously, and it's all in good fun. But in most cases Dark Lotus is meant for hardcore juggalos only, as most rap/hiphop artists/fans would be disgusted at the album. One positive about Black Rain is the absence of Marz (who appeared on the original Dark Lotus album), and the addition of Mike P (from Zug Izland) & Jumpsteady, who you don't offer hear from especially on a Dark Lotus album. Tales From The Lotus Pod & Black Rain go hand in hand, you can't really have one without the other.
