Cons: Very ordinary - Axl needs Slash and the boys to really shine
The Bottom Line: I would buy this CD only as a piece of history. I just don't think the music itself has enough to recommend it. It is only rescued by Axl's vocals.
coyotextr's Full Review: The Roots of Guns N' Roses by Hollywood Rose
I bought the album because of the 'Gunners' connection, and for that reason only.Anybody expecting a younger Guns 'n' Roses will be disappointed.
What we do have is 5 songs, all penned by Axl in collaboration with Chris Weber (guitarist) and others. The 5 songs are recorded in 3 versions -1.) the original demo version,2.) the remix by Gilby Clarke (with guitar overdub by Tracii Guns on two tracks) and 3.)the remix by Fred Coury ( Cinderella's drummer)
The 5 tracks are
1.)Killing Time
2.)Anything Goes
3.)Rocker
4.)Shadow of your love(also on 'Appetite for destruction')
5.)Reckless Life (on EP 'Live Like a Suicide')
The original demo version has more bite to it than the 'rehashed, versions, and the songs are dominated by Axl's vocals. All in all, a very average 1980's LA Punk/Rock band.
What made Guns 'n' Roses unique was the combination of its members' talents. Individually, before or since, none of these individuals has achieved anything of note. Slash's Snakepit, Izzy Stradlin's JuJu Hounds, Axl's various attempts at reforming G 'n' R.....all pretty mediocre.
the great sadness for me is that a band with such swagger and talent just couldn't get on !And they did have SWAGGER !
The CD album notes for Hollywood Rose were written by Vicky Hamilton, who knows what she's talking about. She managed Guns 'n' Roses ( and Poison and Faster Pussycat)
