When I saw Brandy Norwood climb up into the role of Moesha on the show of the same name, I became very interested in her musically and as an actress. She was singing songs like "I Want To Be Down" and I could interpret every song on her debut album Brandy. Her songs were catchy and really caught my attention.
She kept the feeling soulful and funky over the years as she progressed and matured into a new sound. In 2004, she released her fourth album entitled Afrodisiac. I say fourth because I am not counting the best of album. Full Moon (the one right before this one)was a really good one too. She still injects her state of the art energy into the mix. She was still singing real stories of life, love had, love lost and her experiences.
The album features 15 songs. I heard that there was a reissue of this album featuring 3 extra songs on it. With the 15, I did not feel as if it was lacking anything though. The content was pretty decent and I liked the listen. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that this album was like her diary interpreted into melodious songs with lots of attitude. I got a more realistic and up to date feel for the poet in her.
On this album, her voice sounds a lot more convincing and the music sounds even more harmonious and genuinely soulful. She has some really nice cuts and does some warm improvising and ad-libs.
One thing that never changes about Brandy is the catchiness of her tunes. Like in the song Necessary where I got a taste of some confident lyrics. She never really stretches her vocal chords too far but rather stays within her normal vocal boundaries. There is nothing wrong with a laid back singer although she does add emotional fervor into her songs to make them sound as sweet as honey.Itrises to the occasion with a mixture of steady on the drum upbeat tracks and harmonious slow jams. Guest stars Kanye West and T.I. entice the already good songs just a little bit. While some songs show the pop singer in a laid back vocal flow, others show her getting the crowd aroused with some upbeat hip-hop back beats to get listeners to shake their rumps like in the spiced by Timbaland produced song Turn It Up. This is a pretty good album and I enjoyed the whole ride.
