Big Jut's Tribute To D.J. Screw

Written: Feb 17 '06 (Updated Feb 20 '06)
Pros:A few solid tracks.
Cons:Some tracks lack good production.
The Bottom Line: This CD is a must have for DJ Screw fans and sippers, but is not a CD for those new to chopped and screwed music.

This CD is the Official (not bootlegged) version of the Big Jut hosted, Screwed Up Fo Life compilation. Big Jut promotes himself as the last original member of the Screwed Up Click which was led by the legendary DJ Screw before his untimely death.

D.J. Screw was the chief pioneer of the genre of music known as "Chopped & Screwed." This sound was originally achieved by using two copies of the same record. The pitch of the records were then slowed down and then played at millisecond intervals at the same time. This method gives the lyrics a slurred sound and gives the music an echo. The process involved in creating this type of music has since evolved to using phasing, echo effects and other devices to achieve the same sound. In simple terms, "Screwing," is slowing the music down and "Chopping," is the repeating of lyrics.

The artists on this album other than Big Pokey and Lil’ Keke are relatively unknown outside of Houston and Texas hip-hop enthusiast circles. I love and miss DJ Screw and have the utmost respect for all the members of the Screwed Up Click, but this CD falls short of far short of being anything outstanding. However, it does have a few noteworthy tracks.

The first track on the CD is entitled Grey Tapes and is the introduction for the album. With a very heavy echo effect, Big Jut sends out various shout outs. (For those who do not know, the Grey Tapes were the first tapes put out by D.J. Screw that showcased his unique production style.)

Track number two, Big Body’s, is a slow paced jam that opens with keyboards reminiscent of old school D.J. Laz instrumental work and UGK’s extended remix of Front, Back and Side To Side and transitions into music that is almost identical to that of Silkk Tha Shocker’s Just Be Straight With Me. Big Pokey busts the first verse in his customary laid back style, now familiar to most Dirty South hip-hop fans due to his appearances on Paul Wall’s track, Sittin’ Sidewayz, Tow Down’s Country Rap Tune and Lil’ Flip’s Starched and Cleaned. The chopping on this song is rather haphazard and the poor editing makes it sound more like a skipping CD than a well-produced chopped and screwed track.

The third song on the CD is S.U.C. Fo Life. S.U.C. is the acronym for Screwed Up Click. This song uses the same keyboard sample that was used on Silkk The Shocker’s single Just Be Straight With Me. E.S.G. puts down a solid flow on this track, but the chopping and screwing on this track leaves a great deal to be desired. The song isn’t really screwed (slowed), but is heavily chopped. The chopping on this song is a bit too liberal and does nothing to emphasize key lyrics in the song. If you like ESG’s flow on this track, check out Slim Thug and ESG’s album

We So Throwed, which is the fourth track on the CD is one of the best songs on this compilation. The song is heavily, but expertly chopped. This song is perfectly screwed. The keyboards and synthesizer sound great screwed. In this song, Big Kwame, Sisco and Nino rap about why they are so throwed. They rap about their blinged out jewelry, tight whips, fly clothing, sippin’ syrup and all the fly hoes they pimp. This track is a must have for all fans of chopped and screwed music.

The fifth song on the album, Win Or Lose, is performed by Lord Ace. This track is quite unspectacular and boring. It’s not terrible or annoying, but it doesn’t have any hooks that will stick in your mind after hearing it. This track doesn’t serve to be much more than album filler.

Track number six is I’m Everything is performed by Nino. The flows on this track are somewhat weak and screwing them up does nothing to improve them. The music is not all that great either. This song goes on way too long and leaves the listener bored and waiting for the next track. This song wouldn’t be too bad if you got it on a thirty song freestyle mix tape for five bucks, but on an officially released compilation CD that retails for $14.99, it really has no place. Like Win Or Lose, this song serves to do little more than act as an album filler.

The seventh song, Beltway 8 is performed by Beltway 8. This track is a mix tape style freestyle. It has some pretty good flows, but it is not one of the best songs on the CD. It is screwed nicely, but has no chopping. If you like freestyle screwed songs, you might like this one.

We Sip Syrup, which is the eighth song, is by far one of the tightest tracks on the CD. The chopped only version of this song is available on the CD, Third Coast Heat. This song is flawlessly chopped and screwed. This song is all about sippin’ syrup and gettin’ screwed up. This track is a must have for all sippers.

Track nine is F*ck Wit Me performed by Nino. This song has a nice R&B sound to it, similar to Z-Ro or Devin tha Dude. In this song Nino warns any ladies that want to get with him that because he is a hustler, he may not come some nights. Nino explains in his flow that if they do get with him, he will make it worth their while. This song is not slowed down too much, but the chopping is nicely done.

Pimp Tyte is the tenth song on the CD. Kazy D and J.T. Bigga Figga rap on this one. This song is not really slowed too much, but the chopping is decent. Though the song is rather unremarkable, those who like flows with old school type hooks may like this track. The last verse of this song has a pretty tight flow.

The eleventh song is titled Playa Fo Sho and is not really anything spectacular. This track is not significantly screwed, but the chopping is well done. However, this track lacks any truly strong flows.

The twelfth song on this album is Closer. It has a nice mellow sound and some solid flows. This track is about what it is like to be player. Though it is not the tightest track on the CD, it has some nice flows and is definitely worth a listen.

The thirteenth song on the CD is Only Live Onse. (I didn’t spell once wrong; that’s the way it’s spelled on the CD) This track is screwed quite nicely and has a good hook. This song features the rhyming skills of E.S.G. and Shotcallers. The flows are tight and the chopping is non-intrusive. This song is about the fact that we only live once and we must work hard to survive and make the most of our situations.

On the back of the CD, track fourteen is listed as Poppin’ Pills, Sippin’ Syrup performed by Nino. On the store bought CD I have, this song is not present. I’m guessing it was a printing error.

The final track on this compilation is a heavily slowed version of S.U.C. Fo Life performed by Youngstar and Lil’ Keke. This version is far better than the one presented on track three. The chopping and screwing on this song is much closer to what DJ Screw used to do than any other track on the record.

As I stated earlier in this review, I do have much love for DJ Screw, God rest his soul and the utmost respect for the members of the Screwed Up Click, but this CD is just not very good. The production quality from track to track varies a great deal. If you are expecting this CD to rival anything that the great D.J. Screw released, you will be quite disappointed.

This CD is definitely a must have for all DJ Screw, S.U.C. fans and sippers, but if you are new to Screw music or weren’t a fan before hearing this, there is nothing on this album that will turn you on to it. If you are a fan of Dirty South chopped and screwed music and can score this CD used for $6.99 or less, you might want to give it a listen. If you have never listened to chopped and screwed music before, this is not a good starter CD.
