Marilyn Manson's Shakespeare: Lest We Forget

Written: Jul 17 '06 (Updated Jul 17 '06)
Pros:The perfect record for a Marilyn Manson newbie!
Cons:HA!
The Bottom Line: How about Lest We Do Not Forget?

Having recently found my way to Marilyn Manson's music, I can honestly say I am a pretty big fan of Marilyn Manson. I did not buy his greatest hits first; instead I started with the 2003 record, The Golden Age Of Grotesque which I truly loved. Then, I made my way to 1996's AntiChrist Superstar and then 2000's Holy Wood and then finally to 1998's Mechanical Animals. I didn't buy the rest of his albums because I don't care for them as much as the ones I have. I finally made my way to 2004's Lest We Forget which is a life span of Marilyn Manson's music career(1994-2003). This is a great collection for those who want to try a piece of Marilyn Manson's music. This disc contains Marilyn Manson's greatest hits to get the newbie started.

Marilyn Manson is best known(besides his personality, looks) for his voice is a powerful machine and he does yell a lot on songs. He just sounds amazing when he bursts out with anger and lets it all out in yells. It's bliss. Songs like The Fight Song, The reflecting God, Lunchbox and Tourniquet really capture this greatly. Although, he basically yells in almost every song, these stand out. These four songs are heavy, intense and there's no perfect place for Manson to let his anger out than these four songs. Now, there are more qualities in Manson's voice: growls and snarls. Yes, you read right. Hearing Manson's voice sinister voice just wants to make you curl. I believe This Is The New Sh*t greatly captures this effect because he basically growls the chorus out and makes it a very catchy song. More songs like The Love Song, The Beautiful People and mOBSCENE also capture this as well. These are raw songs, although a tad less on the angry side of Manson, but definitely on a great growling sound and not to mention catchy as well.

For a more sinister side to Manson, but with a light mix as well, The Dope Show, Tainted Love and Sweet Dreams(are made of this) should satisfy. They do have a light side especially the last two which are two covers. They hardly intense as you'd expect. I never really care for those two songs, but they do a great job than the original versions while "The Dope Show" is like Manson; it is a gritty and funky song. It also has an amazing catchy chorus.

Now, I'll admit, Marilyn Manson can't really do slow songs that well, however, I do enjoy them. Long Hard Road Out Of Hell is the only song and this song is a phase where Marilyn Manson can tackle emotions that anger him and let them out in a soft voice or whatever he does. The reason why songs like these aren't really great to many is because they drag. This song is draggy because the production isn't much. A mild bass and lukewarm guitar licks is the only sounds here. Slowly paced vocals bound on this track and I'll admit, I don't care too much for this song at all.

One last thing Marilyn Manson can do with his voice: anthem songs. Yes, songs like Disposable Teens, The Nobodies, Rock Is Dead and Get Your Gunn really shine in that department. The bass thumps and kick, the guitars pluck and blurt out and here comes Manson with all those great qualities that he has: snarls, growls, high-pitched screams/yells and he combines them in these songs.

The newest song, Personal Jesus is quickly a song out of the ordinary. It's not a slow and draggy song for sure, but it's not an intense song either. The beat will just crawl under your skin and creep you out. The bass is almost like "Beautiful People", but less bass. It has a great beat to it and Manson does a great job with his sinister vocals; very eerie and haunting.

I have definitely changed my routine while writing this review. I did not explain each song like I usually do, but since this is a collection of songs that I already did, I provided you a list of Marilyn Manson albums that I have reviewed and you can find more there. Lest We Forget is a great collection of Marilyn Manson's hits that will hopefully create a new fan base and help the long time fans grow even stronger for more of Marilyn Manson in the future.
