Reise, Reise was released in late 2004. It's the fourth disk from German techno-metal band, Rammstein. Nearly all the songs are in German, sung in a powerful bass voice that is very original, contrasting favourably to the anaemic British-American style. Another distinctive feature is the thrilling way R's are pronounced in the German style with a rolling sound. There's a sense of pride in that.
Rammstein are loud but don't have a lot of guitar solos. Their music is a mixture of electronic and heavy guitar rhythms. Usually songs develop in a sort of talking style, then a rousing chorus follows, accompanied by metal rhythms that can be quite melodic.
Reise, Reise has 11 songs. It begins with the title song and opener on their current European tour. Rammstein fans won't be disappointed with this one, as it's superior to Mein Herz Brennt, the first song on the excellent 2001 release, Mutter. It's followed by Mein Teil, based on a true story about a German cannibal who ate another man by mutual agreement. Very creepy. Dalai Lama is a quieter song with plenty of emotion in the vocals. Keine Lust follows in a more traditional Rammstein fashion, and is similar to Marilyn Manson's Beautiful People; though better.
Notable among the remainder are Amerika, Moskau, and Amour. The first is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on American cultural influence - Coca Cola, Wonderbra, Mickey Mouse - it's wunderbar. Moskau has female accompaniment in Russian and an uptempo beat. This is in contrast to the words of the song itself, which begin with 'Moscow is a prostitute'. There's a cruel turn to this one which is very effective. Amour is a slow song and features a beautiful guitar note reminiscent of Mutter on the previous album. It finishes the disk beautifully.
Compared to previous releases, Reise, Reise is more subdued. The gentler singing is too close to talking at times and this takes the edge of them. Similarly, when they sing in English on Amerika they lose their mystique for me. It's not a bad song though, but politics isn't what they do. There is one song which is quite new for Rammstein and that's Los. It sounds like a Ry Cooder song, in German, and could well end up on a Hollywood soundtrack.
Overall, Rammstein have matured and I definitely recommend Reise, Reise.
