wifeofvolsfan's Full Review: Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 by Toby Keith
My husband won a copy of Toby Keiths Greatest Hits 2 so I was able to get it a little earlier and start listening to it. It was released today, November 9, 2004, so you can head out to the store today and pick up your own copy. Toby Keith has always been one of my favorites so I think fans are getting their money's worth when they buy this CD.
There are three songs from each of his last three albums: How Do You Like Me Now?, Pull My Chain and Unleashed. Then you also get three new songs as well as two songs that are done live. So fourteen songs of some of Tobys best stuff right here on one CD.
It begins with How Do You Like Me Now!? which is a song about someone who has made it with a singing career and is asking an girl that he used to be interested in how she likes him now that he is famous. This is a fast paced song that is like an in your face - I've made it song. I think Toby can apply this song to Nashville too because they snubbed him for so long and he is finally a huge star. Country Comes to Town is a song that Toby wrote letting everyone know that he is country and proud of it. It says Im a haysee - and a plow boy - Im a farm kid - And a cowboy - Im a roughneck. Its a fun, fast paced song that would be great for dancing to in a country bar. You Shouldnt Kiss Me Like This is a slow, really pretty ballad. It is a song about two friends that are dancing and are starting to fall in love. He doesn't want her to kiss him "like that" if she doesn't mean it "like that".
Im Just Talking About Tonight is another great bar song. Its about your typical guy who is out wanting to have fun for the night and the girl who is looking for a husband. I Wanna Talk About Me is probably the closest thing you will ever hear to Country Rap all in the same song. It was written by the famous songwriter, Bobby Braddock. He has written many country songs with probably the most famous being the George Jones hit He Stopped Loving Her Today. Its about a guy that always talks to his girl about everything to do with her and he wants to finally just talk about him. I wanna talk about me - Wanna talk about I - Wanna talk about number one - Oh my me mine - What I think, what I like, what I know, what I want, what I see - I like talking about you you you, usually, but occasionally - I wanna talk about me.
I remember hearing My List shortly after the tragic day of 9/11. It is a slower song with lots of guitar. It is about taking time for the important things and making sure that you do the fun things in life. It spent five weeks at #1. Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American) is a song that Toby wrote in response to the terrorists attacks on 9/11. Many people are really proud of this song, but a lot of other people had a negative response to it. The line that caussed all the fuss is Youll be sorry that you messed with the US of A - Cuz well put a boot in your a** - Its the American way. Some Americans were offended by this. Personally I thought it was a great patriotic song written from the heart. Whos Your Daddy? is a fun, fast paced song that fans love. Beer for my Horses was another huge hit for Toby. Its a duet with Willie Nelson, who I think did an awesome job. Its about getting justice.
Stays in Mexico is the latest single from Toby. Its about an insurance salesman and a first grade teacher who hook up in Mexico for a very hot affair. They dance and drink margartias in between him calling home to check on his wife and kids. It is a fast song with lots of guitar. Mockingbird is a new song that Toby sings with his daughter, Krystal. Wow, Im really impressed. I think she sounds great. She sorta reminds me a little bit of Lila McCann. Toby and Krystal sound awesome together and Im really glad he decided to include a duet with her. Go With Her is another new song. Its about a couple that is breaking up and the mans dad tells him to just pack up and go with her.
You Aint Much Fun and Shouldve Been a Cowboy are two older Toby songs that are fan favorites. They are live recordings. I think they did a great job with the recording because many times live recordings the crowd will be so loud you can barely hear the singer. Thats not the case on these songs though. You can hear Toby great. Shouldve Been a Cowboy is the song that broke Toby into country music. It was his first hit and really put him on the country music map.
This is really a fun CD with a lot of great songs on it. Im glad that Toby has finally obtained the stardom that he deserves. I like that he is stayed true to country and not tried so hard to be pop too. I could hear a lot of piano, drums and guitars in his songs. You can also expect to hear some bass, horns and saxophone. Many of the songs are fast paced and would be great for dancing in a country bar. The majority of the songs are fun, fast paced songs.
