I like the album fine, but I prefer Paul McCartney's "Back In The USSR" album. John Lennon did "Rock 'n Roll," in part, to settle a lawsuit between himself and Chuck Berry. Berry sued Lennon for taking lyrics from "You Can't Catch Me" and quoting them verbatim in "Come Together." The album, in fact, was originally released on Adam VIII records by Berry's side, assuming the LP distribution would be a part of the settlement. Lennon, however, was able to stop the Adam VIII LP after a couple of weeks of phone sales. "Rock 'n Roll" eventually made its debut on Apple, with fewer tracks than the Adam VIII effort. There are times when this album feels forced, but Lennon unleashed albums that were worse. I thought you might like to know, if you didn't already. Thanks for sharing!

See--I don't think it sounds forced at all. Maybe it's because of my relative innocense to the whole Lennon/Berry fight and Lennon's material in general. In any case, I really, honestly think it's fantastic stuff.

I'll throw in my two cents on the history lesson, and why I agree that this album doesn't sound forced - Lennon lived and breathed songs like these for years before the Beatles hit it big. These kinds of songs were their bread and butter back when they struggled to get heard, and I think that John loved this kind of material for what it had meant to him.

I also enjoy Lennon's version of "Stand By Me" better than the Ben E. King original. In fact, it was the first version of the song I ever heard, in 1975. The original King version is as old as I am (43 years).
By coincidence, I just had a conversation with another person, Jen, who turned four the very day Lennon died.

....no clue that this album even existed. It is definitely going on my Christmas list for my hubby. Wow, will he be surprised.
He is really into classic rock and of course we both love anything by any one of the beatles. This sounds amazing.

I'm always glad when I'm able to help. A revisit to this release (with the new tracks) will be in order. It's been awhile, and I've been looking to update some of my Lennon albums to CD. I still don't think this album is as good as Lennon's original material.

as in all things, the money is usually at issue. If you are making enough that it doesn't matter, then you don't worry about the song writer royalties. That is why there are so few tribute albums. The only real money made is from song writer royalties. At least in the seventies that was certainly true.
This is indeed a stunning collection, and you really captured something writing about it....very nice.

I've had a copy of this LP (CD too) since it came out. This record is Lennon at his most elemental. He always traveled with a stack of his favorite 45 rpm singles and small record player -- every song on "Rock n Roll" is his version of one of those favorite '45's.
Thanks for a great review, I didn't know about the remaster -- now I can go out and buy myself an early Xmas present that I already know I'm sure to like.

Nice job and I'm glad even though you didn't grow up with The Beatles or Lennon as he was making these records that you got into them and they are 'part of you'.
As it should be.
(There's a word or two that got left out of your review. I think you want to say real ALBUM in the first line. )
