'Goofy Euro-Pop' may have never sounded so good

Written: Oct 27 '04 (Updated Oct 29 '04)
Pros:Un-Detected free will creation with no limits
Cons:The line may have been crossed between free will and too far
The Bottom Line: Get from a friend... Don't get me wrong if catchy pop is your thing by all means purchase and relax..if not wait for LP and try again

Turn the volume down quick! Wew….. The first chord may pop an ear drum if your not aware of the level of your volume is at. With song titles like "Shimmy Shimmy Quarter One" and "Jesse Buy Nothing...Go to Prom anyway" This self titled release is one of the goofiest, edgy and poppy EP's of the year. Though it may sound awfully mean, these California boys may find this to be a compliment. Says Keyboardist Jesse Kurvink. “It was completely something we started doing as friends, stuff we thought was fun and liked playing. That's why we're not like a lot of bands out there. It's great that there are bands that tackle serious issues, but that's not us."

Perhaps viewable as yet another installment of that whiny cheesy brand of Emo, these guys seem to strike a chord in my generation x brain every here and there. Exhibit A, is “Jesse Buy Nothing….Go To Prom Anyway”. Easily the most raw, and least produced track here, this song shows the beautiful nuances of just having fun with music. “"Jesse needed to ask a girl to the prom," says lead singer Forrest Kline. "We figured a song was the best way to go, so we made the song in my house, made a nice little package for it and then I delivered it via ‘Hellogoodbye express mail,'. Changing the rhythm of the entire project is the song to follow, “Dear Jamie, Sincerely Me”. This song shows a enjoyable view of serious songwriting, and not just throwing together simplistic sounds.

Do yourself a favor and minus the periodical addition of the “AOL” instant message sound bite. Even further, ignore the immediate natural instinct to believe your listening some cheesy 80’s movie’s soundtrack that probably should never have been made. What do you have left? Imagine the Tazmanian devil on bad liquid acid and juice playing the keyboard. Throw in a some playful vocals, all of a sudden you have the makings of a pretty damn catchy EP.
