I only own a few CD's, which I mainly use in the car while sitting in DC's traffic. So, the quality of the sound, which is impacted by the noise of diesel trucks, fire engines and roaring mufflers, is not as good as sitting in a chair with headphones on. I have to qualify this review based on my audio equipment, which may not be fair to the CD.
The CD cover states that the "Greatest hits inclusion based on original record sales, airplay and known download history." What an honest confession! I have heard many a CD claiming to be "greatest hits" and I often wondered by whose standards? I am pleased to say that out of 16 songs on this CD, there were maybe 2 that I didn't recognize. The rest were songs that I had heard and appreciated in the past.
Not everybody appreciates Neil Young's falsetto voice and jamming guitars with heavy bass, which make him a unique artist. His music is definitely from the 60's and that is why I like it. I happen to be a geezer from the 60's myself! There is something about this CD that immediately takes me back to those thrilling "hippy " days of yesteryear, where war protesters were everywhere and the world seemed to be coming to an end. I guess you just had to be there to understand that. The CD definitely takes you back a few years, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
All I can say is that the songs on this CD did sound as good as I remembered they did originally, but I wish I could compare this remixed CD to one not remixed. I think the CD's sound might be almost too crisp and separated. It sounded almost "too clean" and not as raw and unrehearsed as I remembered from the radio and my old albums. Then again, it could be my audio equipment, as I already mentioned.
As for the selection of songs, themselves, they're just terrific if you are a Neil Young fan, which I happen to be. "Cowgirl in the Sand," and "Cinnimon Girl" followed by one of my favorites (turn up the volume), "Southern Man." Then there's "Hey Hey, My My" and "Rockin in the Free World," some heavy, driving Neil Young hits.
I won't do a review of the songs on the CD, except to mention that they do include many of the hits that we remember when we think of Neil Young without Crosby, Stills and Nash. You can find reviews of the songs elsewheres.
