I have to disagree... (Reply to this comment)

with your comment about Paul mauling his verse on Bridge. But I guess you just had to be there. I haven't heard it on this recording but I heard it at the concert and it was nothing short of touching. Sure, he doesn't have the vocal range of Artie and doesn't carry the song off nearly as well. But just seeing them share that song, finally, in person was amazing.

Great review (Reply to this comment)

I'm soooo looking forward to this album. I've been wanting to get it for quite a while. I hope "Citizen of the Planet" isn't as much of a letdown as you suggest, though. I wish they'd have recorded something entirely new, but at least this is semi-new, which is exciting enough for me. As for Clay, I was glad to see him do "Bridge," though I wish he'd gone for a version closer to the original with a lot more vocal dynamics. At any rate, though, Simon and Garfunkel's version of "Bridge" is one of those perfect recordings. Can't improve on that!

Exactly what I was thinking... promos no one wants???? I wish I could get a crack at 'em. Hmmmm... NYC is only about a ten hour drive for me... Oh boy, would we have fun.
Stellar review as always Paul, I continue to love how you weave personal tidbits into your writing.

Glenn-
You just about shattered my memory of the lyrics of that song, but I've looked it up, and several sources confirm that it is "silver girl" (though the lyric sheet of the "Bridge Over Troubled Water" album has it as "silvergirl".)

that they seem married--with all the good and bad that that entails. I was lucky enough to see them on the recent reunion tour in Phila. Just a magical evening, for several generations of fans.
Oh, and isn't it "sail on silver bird" rather than "silver girl", as you wrote? I didn't look up the lyrics, but it always sounds like girl to me. But I could be wrong. Unlike the President.

The Sounds Of An Olive Branch... (Reply to this comment)

Hey Paul-
It's funny...I almost tossed this into the "promos no one wants" pile at work (which now takes up an entire 6 foot shelf), then I thought "Hey, I remember Paul mentioning something about liking Simon & Garfunkel once. He'll probably like this." (I still haven't checked to verify whether you actually did mention something about liking S&G or whether that's the product of my fertile imagination). Anyway, glad you liked the CD. I didn't really get ito them till after high school-when "Cecelia" became the soundtrack to a couple of drunken singalongs. I love the sound of two voices in harmony. Makes me think about all that brotherly stuff that makes me the sap that I am.
So, um...anyway. Glad you liked the CD.
You're welcome.
:)

Hey, Willow... thanks for the info on "Citizen". The copy I'm reviewing off of is a promo with no sleeve (and thus no info). How awesome that you got to see them (TWICE!), but it's such a bummer to see that they weren't necessarily enjoying themselves in Chicago. (And I've never seen a band NOT have a blast in Milwaukee... except for Sinead O'Connor in 1990. She was pissed off. But oh well.)
Thanks for stopping by.

Yeah, I saw them not once, but twice on their reunion tour. Paul Simon is like a second father to me, one of my biggest influences. And I was one of those people who yelled out 'I love you!', embarrassing yes, I know.
Nice review. Though I'm in complete denial that they don't get along and that they're old. But they did seem to be having fun at the Milwaukee concert, they weren't at the Chicago one though.
What's funny about "Citzen of the Planet" is that Paul's vocals are from the seventies and only Artie laid vocals on it this year.
That's too bad that you missed the concert, it was quite the emotional experience.
Cheers,
Willow
