Pros: The Emancipation of Mimi was a complete album with life and not much missing.
It's really rare for me to listen to an album for the first time and feel like I have heard such a complete package that it is important for me to listen to it again. Mariah Carey has always been one of my favorite singers because of the heart she has for singing, the passion that she shows and the way that God has blessed her vocally with such strong pipes.
Ever since she first came out with, Mariah Carey which was her first album, she had impressed listeners with her soft ballads, funky tracks and innocent look.
It is true that Mariah Carey's image did change a little bit, but it is also important to remember that sometimes, competition that's out here like Beyonce and J-Lo, demand a sexier image. It is also true that she stopped doing as many ballads and more hip-hop like tracks featuring rap artists in the industry. And lastly, it is true that she was going through personal things and did a movie that many people conceived to be not to their liking, though that had nothing to do with her music. Personally, Mariah Carey's vocal stylings and her writing skills are what impressed me more than anything else. I loved her then for giving me a reason to want to listen, learn and sing and I still love her now.
The Emancipation of MiMi proves that she is not just some chick who people can bad mouth and make feel like she is not worthy of using the beautiful talent that God has blessed her with. And she did it well topping the charts since the release date on April 12th, 2005. This album is much different than the other ones, but if you were to compare it to any other one that she has, I would compare it to Butterfly or Charmbracelet because those are the the two albums that touched me the most. It has a lot of soul, harmony, vibrance, electrifying words, grooving bass lines and the tracks alone just make this a really good album to listen to.
Here are some of the tracks that touched me the most
She starts the album out almost the same way that Faith Evans started her new album out with a groovy track about dancing and having fun with her girls. It's Like That has lots of movements and an acoustic drum sound. This is the first song released on the New York radio waves from the album. The tempo is decent and so are the lyrics. 'Cause it's my night, no stress no fights just leaving it all behind. No tears, no time to cry just making the most of life. Everybody is living it up, Me and my girls on the floor like what when the deejay puts his spin on the cut. It's like that y'all.
(2)We Belong Together is one of those mid-tempo ballads with a kick. You can actually get up and dance soulfully to this song without feeling like time is dragging. This was the second song released on the radio in New York and this song affected me because of her mentioning of other singers songs in this song. She shows her strong vocals in this song without hitting the high notes. Personally I like the high notes, but this was the second song and no high notes yet. You might like this one. When you left you took a piece of me. It's been so hard to believe. You're not here with me 'cause we belong together.
(3) Shake It Off is one of those songs that I haven't heard Mariah sing before. You know how artists come out with songs that all sound the same? Well this song made a difference. I liked it off the bat because of the drive of the song. It has lots of movement. She sings very staccato almost as if she is scatting when she sings like Amel Larrieux does. I like the way that she starts it off really mellow and then drives into a forceful and soulful change that makes this song a quality song. I also liked the fact that the hook is sung almost in the way that a rapper would like 50 Cents or Iced Cube would sing it. It gave the song a flow that I haven't really heard in songs lately, which is really a good thing. I've got to shake it off, 'cause your loving ain't the same and you keep on playing games like my love is here to say. I've got to shake it off, like the cabs on commission like, "I just got to get up out of here and go somewhere.
The next song is a ballad called, Mine Again. It is really cool the way that she starts this song off with, I remember the day. To start the song off the way she did full of emotion, made this song really good to me. I love the words, the tempo and the instrumentation of it. There's not too much background in this song and it is really soft and soothing to listen to. Plus I love that she added her high note to the very end of this song. It made this song a true ballad because she started out very low and modulated to her high Minnie Riperton note and I love the way that this song felt to listen to. Baby, you should be mine! Again. Maybe we should make this dream for real like way back when. When loves was yours and mine. Maybe we could bring it back to life. Life
(5)Say Something is the fastest song on this album and features Snoop Dogg. It isn't my favorite but her voice sounds pretty in it. The track is the most different sounding track on this album. No other track touches the quality, the kick, the drive or the keyboard line. I like the music and her words are always something heart-felt to me, but this song didn't really effect me like Like That did. If it's worth your while say something, say something. If it's worth your while. Say something good to me.
(6)Stay The Night is a really nice slow song. It seems like every other song is a slow song, then a fast song and so on. I like this one because it reminds me of an old song, though I can't place it, from the 1980s. Those were the days when songs had lots of soul and flava and a listener could emote from just listening to a couple of bars. The way she sings it gives the listener a way to relate to her and she sings with such tenacity. And you keep saying stay the night. Just let me rock you 'til the morning light. It's cold outside and much too late to drive. Oh baby, I'm so lost without your love. And my favorite part is in the vamp when she says, " and you keep on saying" because it is full of feeling and fits the song very well.
I think Circles is my favorite song because I like the melody, the background the arrangement and the music. It has everything that a song should and has a great sound to it. I like the drive, I like her ability to change from head tone to full voice because many people don't realize that in singing, it is not an easy thing to do and she shows her strong vocals when she does this. I admire the way she pushes out her voice when the emotions start to build. Boy, my world has changed. And I don't think I can make it without you. Nothings the same. You got me running around in circles over you.
(10)Your Girl is the song where she breaks out of her shell and tells the man that she adores that she is not going to be so innocent and nice anymore and let him know exactly what she is feeling. This song is a song that I could relate to because I've come across situations like this and I understood exactly what she was feeling. The hook is very catchy and since the words are words that are understandable, clear and at the right time, it made me feel like, hey, I know what she's talking about. I'm gonna make you want to get with me tonight. I'm gonna put those naughty thoughts within your mind. I'm gonna make you feel like I can rock your world. I'm gonna make you know that I should be your girl. Well I used to be afraid.
(11) I Wish You Knew is one of those old sounding songs again. I like the background because it fits the music so well. I like the slow drive of this song and what sounded to me like horns. I like her vocal range from when she says, But I wish you knew to How I love you baby. This is a really good song too, but not my favorite. My favorites are 1,2,3,9 and the last song.
What I like about Mariah Carey is that on every album she has, she includes a song that is about her relationship with or her love for the Lord. She is very diverse to be able to pull it off and so powerfully. Her voice escalates to the sky as she says, I love you Jesus in, Fly Like a Bird. The background or what sounded like a choir though it was only 3 people behind her, was very nicely done. This song is very full of life and vibrant and ends the album well because with everything that you hear on this album and then for The Emancipation of Mimi to end like this, I didn't feel like this was an empty album nor did I feel like something was missing from it.
I enjoy this album from beginning to end every time I listen to it. I have always been a big Mariah fan and I always have her back because people including, 98.7 Kiss FM NY always compare her to Whitney Houston and then badger her because of their personal feelings toward her. You can compare Mariah Carey to Whitney Houston but I am not sure if Whitney Houston would have the ability to accomplish succeeding in making an album like this. I love Whitney and that was the other artist that I grew up mimicking and setting as a role model. And I also admit that the difference between Whitney and Mariah Carey is that Whitney puts a lot of soul and much more feeling into the songs when she sings them and Mariah has a quality voice as powerful as Whitney's but at times I can see that Mariah just sings without the emotion that Whitney has and just sings because she knows she can. But Mariah still has the ability to make tracks today, that I think not a lot of singers out now can. I like Mariah's style and her tenacity. Her flow is really deep and she is a writer.
I would consider buying this album if I were you. If you have never purchased an album by Mariah, this is a good album to start with because of it's vibrance. Once you see how good this album is, you might want to try, Music Box or Butterfly and maybe one day we'll be rooting for her together when they have the artist battles between her and Whitney. If you do decide to get this album, please post a comment and tell me if your thoughts about this album are even close to my thoughts.
This album would make a great gift, album to listen to at work or in your car, or while cleaning. I got mine from Circuit City because if you get the album during the week of it's release, Circuit City sells the album for $9.99. But Amazon also has it and you might even find it for even cheaper on EBAY or Half.com.
Thank you for reading my epinion and have a wonderful Mother's Day.
