| castinbronze's Full Review: Fear of Fours by Lamb |
A friend introduced me to Lamb just a month ago. I was looking for some new work tunes and he handed me their debut CD "Lamb". After one listen, I knew that this group was destined to enjoy heavy rotation in my CD player. That weekend I picked up both their debut, and this album, "Fear of Fours".
Lamb crafts memorable tunes by mixing catchy melodies with intricate and often quirky beats. Singer Lou's voice has become a touch grittier than the first album, but she still maintains a ethereal quality that is pleasing to the ear. The lyrics tend to be rather personal, yet easy to relate to (except for perhaps "Alien" which is about being pregnant). Most of the songs are about being in, or losing love--so this is a great album to listen to whether you're with someone, just broken up, or single and looking for "the One".
"Fear of Fours" is a great step forward since their first effort. Whilst the lyrics are in a similar vein to "Lamb", the music itself, as well as the production have improved greatly. From the easy beginning of "Soft Mistake" to the sonic assault of "B-Line", to the spooky, warbling heartbeats and heavily processed vocals of "Alien" Lamb demonstrates considerable growth in their songwriting and quashes any comments that they are a mere Portishead-ripoff. On the contrary, Lamb displays more depth of heart and clever musical construction than Portishead ever did. Lamb is Portishead with guts!
I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys artists in the Trip Hop genre as well as anyone seeking to expand their musical tastes. Lamb is a great transition between pop and electronic styles.
