Pros:Stunning emotionally charged lyrics and melodies
Cons:NONE
The Bottom Line: "The Tension and the Spark", Darren's second solo album is a surprising release given his former musical releases as a part of Savage Garden. Grab a copy today!
I have been a fan of Darren Hayes since the early days of Savage Garden, his voice is stunning and unique. Hayes' second solo album "The Tension and the Spark" also showcases the mans other talents and leaves the listener in awe. "The Tension and the Spark" moves away for the bubble gum brand of pop toward what real pop music is meant to sound like. The melodies and vocals are intelligent and complex as Darren moves through a variety of influences to create an album that is complete. Beginning with Darkness, Darren explores a sound that is mysterious, dark and beautiful. Contrasted with songs like "Light" and "Feel" whose messages focus on the light at the end of the tunnel, and finding love and peace after conflict and darkness have prevailed within for so long. Darren Hayes is not only able to showcase his legendary vocals but also his chops as an incredible songwriter. This under appreciated artist and album deserve more credit, especially in an industry that is currently dominated by lip syncing and marketing overload. Be sure to check out "Popular" a spoof on the state of pop music culture today, also check out the video. Darren Hayes has broken free of the pop mold and proven himself to be a bonafide artist. "The Tension and the Spark" is a work of art that is able to engage the listener emotionally and move through contrasting themes and sounds. Frustration, anger, hope, love and laughter all of a place on "The Tension and the Spark". My favourites on this album include "Unlovable" - a haunting melody of the struggle in finding acceptance and self-worth, as well as "Void" - a dark exploration of the emptiness associated with the loss of love. Each track on this album is unique, Darren Hayes brings something to the world of pop music that has been missing for quite sometime. Go out and grab a copy today, you will not be disappointed. Shame on Columbia records for letting this brilliant artist go! Look out for Darren's third solo album titled "On the Verge of Something Wonderful" to be released August 21st, 2007 under his own record label Powdered Sugar.
