Chet Baker Plays and Sings the Great Ballads

Written: Jul 24 '01
Pros:West Coast Cool Jazz.
Cons:Get it plus 10 more songs on The Best of Chet Baker Sings.
The Bottom Line: 10 of the 20 songs on The Best of Chet Baker Sings

Identification
This is a completely uncredited version, no artists listed, no indication of when it was originally recorded, etc. Copyright 1992 CEMA Special Markets. Printed and manufactured in Canada. The tray card is pink, the insert (one page) has a cropped thumbnail version of the photograph on the cover of The Best of Chet Baker Sings which is a semi-famous shot of Chet sitting at a piano, looking down, and reflected on the gloss finish of the piano, a trumpet in the distance over his left shoulder.

The Tracks
I gave this disc a listen right after listening to The Best of Chet Baker Sings several times to write the review of it and realized that these songs sounded pretty much the same. But this is Jazz. So, I had a pair of expert ears back up the tentative conclusion of my ear, and Pookie (raised by Poppa jazz) hath declared that these are indeed the same versions, even if the running time of them is off by 1 - 3 seconds (according to the length by the CD player, which just means they cut them differently....it's the same performances). This album came out 3 years after The Best of Chet Baker Sings so it's not too surprising.

1. Time After Time 2:45
2. I Fall In Love Too Easily 3:19
3. It's Always You 3:33
4. I've Never Been In Love Before 4:27
5. My Funny Valentine 2:19
6. The Thrill Is Gone 2:49
7. I Get Along Without You Very Well 2:58
8. Like Someone In Love 2:25
9. My Buddy 3:19
10. You Don't Know What Love Is 4:50

But I don't want you to think I'm trolling for hits over to my review of The Best of Chet Baker Sings, { http://www.epinions.com/content_31949164164 } so I'll cut and paste those song notes here:

1. Time After Time 2:45
Pretty mournful version, or at least laid back. Occasionally picks up on the climatic verses, but you could almost hear this as a 'well, I lost the only good thing in my life, again' sort of tone through most of it.

2. I Fall In Love Too Easily 3:19
Re-recorded at Chet's second gig because the record exec didn't like the first gig recording.
Crooning delivery, and the trumpet parts really work well with that delivery.

3. It's Always You 3:33
Everyone’s laid back here, from the tempo, the delivery, to the trumpet work.

4. I've Never Been In Love Before 4:27
Lots of twinkly piano, especially good work staying along with the singing without overpowering it. A crooning and fragile delivery. It’s easy to imagine the whole group playing this song live, with the smoky pauses in between singing to casually wait for the cue to play.

5. My Funny Valentine 2:19
Sweet melancholic valentine. This song is really mellow, sung with an almost pathetic tone, perhaps this would be a good song to sing while trying to convince someone to come bail you out of a jail in Europe. No trumpet.

6. The Thrill Is Gone 2:49
This is one of the two songs from Chet's first vocal recording gig. This single became a runaway success that lead to the second gig.
This is a pretty self-indulgent, sorrowful treatment of the song, with trumpet and vocals simultaneous.

7. I Get Along Without You Very Well 2:58
Perfect 'I'm filled with void' tone. No trumpet that I can hear on this, just bass, drums, piano and some sort of music-box sounding percussion.

8. Like Someone In Love 2:25
A romantic, languorous song without trumpet.

9. My Buddy 3:19
Starts with a muted trumpet, languorous delivery of the vocals. Good showcase of piano and bass.

10. You Don't Know What Love Is 4:50
This is a just ”beaten up and tossed in a jail in Europe” sort of song.

Conclusion
The music is great, but you really ought to get The Best of Chet Baker Sings instead, because you'll get 10 more West Coast Cool jazz songs. So, sure, I recommend the album, but I really recommend getting The Best of Chet Baker Sings.
