The Best SELLING, Not The BEST

Written: Feb 09 '08
Pros:Some of Eminem's greatest work
Cons:Some pure trash. You have probably heard it all before
The Bottom Line: -

Man, it seems like I haven’t written any Epinions reviews in forever. Actually though, it has just been several months time, mainly due to a broken right wrist (basketball, what else). Anyway, I’m just going to pick up where I left off, and keep pumping out those solid rap album reviews. Expect to see a lot more of me, especially once the summer starts, and I get out of school. Now, lets get to the good stuff...

After releasing the not so great album Encore, Eminem released a greatest hits CD, Curtain Call. This album contains his BEST-SELLING SINGLES, not his BEST SONGS. It really is unfortunate though, because he has so many great songs that didn’t make it onto this CD. Oh yea. In addition to the hit singles, there are also three new songs on the album, “FACK”, “SHAKE THAT”, and “WHEN I’M GONE”.

This album, as with most Eminem albums, opens up with a rather pointless skit. Then comes “FACK”. Great beat, and immature lyrics (basically the definition of his worst album, Encore). But hey, these IMMATURE lyrics are directed to a more, well, MATURE audience. Check this out, and then tell me that Souljaboy (man I hate his a$$) is explicit.

Condom on my d!ck, of course it is/
this b!tch don’t know what abortion is/
so I can’t cum in her/
f*cks like a porn star, looks like Jenna/
f*ck I’m gonna/
cum, I think my rubbers comin off/
but oh it’s so f*ckin wet and soft/
f*ck I’m gonna start lettin off/
I’m squirting and shes not gettin off/

And this continues on for three verses. At one point Em describes an orgasm he get from shoving a gerbil up his, umm, posterior. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. But hey, this song tops “Shake That”, a clubbish piece of rubbish that is basically about, you guessed it, girls shaking their butts. Hey, a note to Em: I can get this crap from the Top 40 station, why the hell would I want it from you, one of the lyrical greats!!! But anyway, moving right along, “Just Lose It”, my all time LEAST favorite Eminem song would have to make its obligatory appearance on this album. Whatever. Simply put, IT SUCKS A BIG ONE. I’ll just leave it at that.

Now, after all of the song bashing I’ve just done, you might get the idea that I hate this album, when in reality, its not that bad. The main problem that I have with it is that it brings very little new to the table, and the old that it brings isn’t necessarily the best. Sure we have the classics like “Lose Yourself”, “Stan”, and “Sing For The Moment”, but we also have stuff like “Without Me”, “My Name Is”, and the aforementioned “Just Lose It”.

Track Listing:

1. Intro (N/A)
2. FACK (3 Stars)
3. The Way I Am (4 Stars)
4. My Name Is (3.5 Stars)
5. Stan (5 Stars)
6. Lose Yourself (5 Stars)
7. Shake That (2 Stars)
8. Sing For The Moment (5 Stars)
9. Without Me (3 Stars)
10. Like Toy Soldiers (5 Stars)
11. The Real Slim Shady (4 Stars)
12. Mockingbird (5 Stars)
13. Guilty Conscience (4 Stars)
14. Cleanin’ Out My Closet (5 Stars)
15. Just Lose It (1 Star)
16. When I’m Gone (5 Stars)

Now that I have listed the track listing with ratings, I would like to just list the songs (in no particular order) that I personally would have liked to see on an Eminem compilation album.

My List:

1. Lose Yourself
2. Sing For The Moment
3. Stan
4. When I’m Gone
5. Cleanin’ Out My Closet
6. Square Dance
7. Till I Collapse
8. Mockingbird
9. Hailie’s Song
10. Rock Bottom
11. Still Don’t Give A F*ck
12. Like Toy Soldiers
13. Rabbit Run
14. Criminal
15. Kim
16. Guilty Conscience

So in conclusion, I think that this album is an adequate buy for the casual rap listener, or for somebody who enjoyed an Eminem single or two, and would like to hear more of him. Hardcore Eminem fans will find this album pointless, as they will already have heard most of the tracks. Yes, its not a bad album per se, but no, its probably not worth your hard earned dollar.
