Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

The Bottom Line: www.milesdavis.com

Life. That’s what Kind of Blue sounds like. I didn’t say that, a friend did.

But, he pinpointed why Kind of Blue is the album that it is. It sounds like life. A person hears it and they subliminally relate to it. They understand. Things make sense…you can relax.

Kind of Blue frees your mind. It makes you think. It allows you to imagine.

Life doesn’t always seem to make sense. We float from here to there. We laugh and then cry. Confusion. Kind of Blue takes the craziness of life and sorts it out. When Miles Davis and company put the pieces together in their magical way everything seems perfect.

Perfect. If ever there was a perfect album it’s Kind of Blue. Each note blends into the next like the purpose for its existence was for this exact moment in time.

Things feel smooth in Kind of Blue’s world. The edges are sanded down and all corners are rounded. Yeah, it’s jazz; but, it’s not trying to push the envelope. …it’s not redundant. …most of all, it’s not boring. No, it’s as it is and as it should be.

I’ve come back to this album more times than any other in my collection. Each time it’s played I’m enticed into its world of contentment within seconds. Slowly and patiently the piano lures me away. Then, the bass says, come a little closer if you dare. Before long Miles creeps in with his trumpet beckoning me to follow.

As I inch my way through the musical kingdom Miles has led me into I have to look around and behold everything like it’s brand new. It’s not as though I’ve never been hear before; the album has carried me away more times than I can remember. But, it’s never carried me away like this.

The tour speeds up at just the right times; but, you know, when I’m with Miles on this album, the best part of speeding up is that you know Miles is getting ready kick things back, chill, and enjoy the scenery.

And, that’s how the Kind of Blue world is. It’s Miles and his friends taking you away from your life and into theirs. All things are familiar there, but everything takes on a different hue.

Dreams are part of the night sky in Kind of Blue and creative visions are given away for free. So, if that’s what you’re looking for, if that’s what you need, Miles will offer it if you spend some time with him.

Most of all, spend some time with Miles to escape life’s insanity. Miles will set you straight. He’ll tell you to relax, get your breath, look around. It’s life. Enjoy it.

So, there you are. Words can only express so much. The rest needs to be felt by the listener. I’ve made the promises, now let Miles prove them to be legitimate.
