jro26's Full Review: Kind of Blue [Remaster] by Miles Davis
It is kind of weird that I haven't ever listened to any of Miles Davis's music before, until I bought this album. Now I am hooked and have already bought 2 of his other albums and can't wait until I listen to them.
This is probably the most influential and best-selling jazz record ever made and I definitly agree with that. On the back of the CD case it says "If this is your first encounter with Kind of Blue, be forewarned that it's likely to become an indispensable part of your life." This statement to me is so true. I truly have not taken this CD out of my Cd player for 2 weeks, from the time that I bought it up until now it remains my number one CD.
It includes a rare bonus track, a stunning alternative of "Flamenco Sketches", it is newly mixed and 20 bit-remastered, so the sound is amazing but yet sounds so good on the cheapest of stereos. It also included in the booklet, rare and previously unpublished session photos.
The songs that it contains that are all very beautiful to listen to are:
1. So What
2. Freddie Freeloader
3. All Blues
4. Flamenco Sketches
6. Flamenco Sketches (Alt. take)
Number 6 is not on the original LP
On this CD Miles Davis plays the trumpet so well that sometimes you don't even think that you are hearing a trumpet. It sounds like he picks up a different instrument in every song. The alto saxophone is played by Julian Adderly in every song except #3. John Coltrane (an exceptional musician) plays the tenor sax in all of the songs. Bill Evans plays the piano in all of the songs except #3 and in song #3 Wynton Kelly plays the piano, both do a very superb job at the piano. Paul Chambers plays an amazing bass. Jimmy Cobb plays the drums in all of the songs. I am so amazed at how well these musicians play together.
This CD (well the original LP) was recorded on March 2, 1959 (#1-3) and the rest were recorded on April 22, 1959. And even though it is only 6 songs the CD is pretty lengthy. The songs total about 55 minutes of wonderful and relaxing music.
One thing that made me hooked on this CD (for life probably) is the fact that I always have trouble falling asleep and the night that we bought this CD we played it in the CD player and I don't even remember hearing the 2nd song. I slept so well that I truly believe that is was from the music of this CD.
I STRONGLY recommend you buying this CD, it is such great background music for anything and everything.
And if you like this CD then look at some of his other CD's because there is about 50 of them so you can never have too much Miles Davis! I recently bought Amandala and Sketches of Spain so I will write about them in the near future also. Some other ones to check out are:
Live-Evil, Milestones, Live at Fillmore, In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, Love Songs, Someday My Prince..., Sorcerer, Miles Smiles, Seven Steps To Heaven, Miles In The Sky, The Man With The Horn, Decoy, Agharta, and there are many many more!
