I honestly may have to check those out. I've not gotten any other Miles Davis, but from what I know both of those are excellent.
Thank you much for your comment.

to the other great Davis/Evans albums? "Porgy and Bess" and "Kind of Blue," that is. The Rodrigo theme from the Concierto de Arjuanez was not nearly as well known back when "Sketches of Spain" was recorded as it is now, and I'd imagine that the recording introduced many people to it.

Tremendous review (Reply to this comment)
by mike.holmes
As always, your review is excellent. This is one of my favorite Davis albums. He certainly was one of the most influential and original jazz artists of all time. I saw him once in concert and he was a big disappointment. He came out by himself, turned his back to the audience and played a strange combination of jazz, classical and rock that was not attractive. That same night a new rock/fusion group played: Blood, Sweat and Tears and their trumpet player blew Davis away. But, Davis was like that--up and down. Thanks for your great review.

This sounds like a must-have. (Reply to this comment)

At least I've got to get it, based on your excellent review.
Jazz occupies much the same place in American music as Impressionism and post-Impressionism occupies in French music. Some Impressionists, such as Ravel, were deeply influenced by Jazz. The American community is beginning to discover that Jazz is America's native classical music and that composers such as Davis and Ellington belong regularly in our concert halls.

Had you given me the Donnas, well, I would have reviewed it but I'm not sure it would have been all that positive :)
Thanks so much for giving me this suggestions. It was a pleasure as always. By the way, I finally got the CDs in the mail today also. Thanks for that--I'll give them a spin when I think of it. And yes, eventually do expect a few mixes from moi when I get around to it.

As I mentioned in the comment section of JennJoy's entry, I agree completely with her diatribe about enjoying jazz but being completely intimidated and confused as to how to even begin to review it.
I'll consider this fantastic review a roadmap. Hats off to you Shelly, this was awesome. And yes, this album is amazing.
Thanks for joining in yet again.
-Matt
PS-Be glad I didn't give you the latest Donnas record...hehehehe

Re: Miles Ahead (Reply to this comment)

Indeed. I appreciated him challenging me to do something new. Like I said, I obviously was modestly familiar with him. I knew he played jazz and I knew a lot of people love him. I also knew that his album often show up on many "best of" lists. I just didn't know THIS album...very interesting stuff...
I think it's funny that we both suggested jazz albums to one another. Of course MC 900 Ft. Jesus is slightly more modern. Cough-cough ;)
Thanks for the comment.

Miles Ahead (Reply to this comment)

"He gave you WHAT to review?"
You know, I had this weird dream last night that Matt had you review a Miles Davis album. It seemed so vivid, too.
At any rate, I'm so glad you got what you did from this particular release. Kind Of Blue is still my all-time favorite, but this one is hard to pass up as well. Just about any Miles is good Miles, really. Though his late 60's and early 70's electric period is rather chaotic and an acquired taste. That being said, make sure you have a few drinks in you before someone plays B*tches Brew, Get Up With It or ESP.
Cheers,
Paul
