PBrady's Full Review: Sketches of Spain [Bonus Tracks] [Remaster] by Mil...
This is my favorite Miles Davis album. What more could you ask for than for the greatest trumpet player to play a Gil Evans arranged version of classical Spanish pieces? The music is wonderful and stirring. Davis plays a funeral solo--an 'arrow of song' directed to an image of Jesus. Normally sung by a woman, Davis' trumpet adds as feeling, as well as extending the possible range. It is stunning!
Davis also shows variety by playing a flugelhorn underneath a classical composition--a completely different melody that just fits in under the main trumpet line.
I have never heard anything like this album--the unusual combination of modern jazz and Spanish Classical pieces is very good at expressing the emotions it is supposed to. I recommend this piece to anyone and everyone. Buy it, even if you never buy any other jazz.
