This was my first exposure to Tori Amos. Thankfully, I had not noticed her foray into glam with Y Kant Tori Read. Smells Like Teen Spirit was what made me get this. I heard it on the radio and was floored by it. The piano and the voice. Alone. Amazing. No info is given on any backing musicians. Cover shows her naked from the top of her breasts up with what appear to be scallions attached to a nest around her neck. Provocative is an understatement.
Crucify from her Little Earthquakes album starts this off and contains the line in the title. Backing band and strings support this powerful song of self-loathing. Piano is the lead instrument. Can hear some mandolin in the mix. “Every finger in the room is pointing at me””Figures that my courage would choose to sell out
now””Nothing I do is good enough for you”
Winter has more deep personal longing. “You must learn to stand up for yourself/ cause I can’t always be around...When you gonna love you as much as I do”. Melancholy strings back the piano on this one. “Things are gonna change so fast.” Starts out, she is a child. As she gets older, she realizes the same lessons apply when you
get older. A remarkable song.
Angie
This Stones cover goes into unexpected areas. Piano and voice. Gets a little funky with it. “Ain’t it time we said goodbye?”
Smells Like Teen Spirit is a remarkable achievement. Once you understand the lyrics, it makes the original seem better also.”With the lights out, it’s less dangerous”.
Thank You
The Led Zeppelin classic from their second album is given loving treatment. She should have learned the lyrics a little better.”Whisper of the pain” becomes “Whisper on the plains”. When I play it on acoustic, I take some of her vocals from this one. Not really sure what she is saying early in the song. The feeling comes through and the
words don’t really matter. Still gives me chills after eight years. Majestic and magnificent. She also has done Whole Lotta Love live, don't know if it was ever released.
I have had this one in my collection for eight years, yet I never picked up the album that it is supposed to promote. The only other Tori I have is the Choirgirl Hotel record which shows her development in lyrics and sound. You can probably pick this EP up for about $10 if you can find it. Some artists have one record that means so much to you, nothing will ever top it. This is that kind of recording for me.
