kativitale's Full Review: God [Maxi Single] by Tori Amos
I first purchased this cd maxi single because I had to collect them all. It was not until I had played this cd through a couple of times before I understood its true worth. This single does more than it's duty to enrich the experience of Under the Pink as a whole, and exposes undercurrents not entirely expressed in the album. The presentation of the title track "God" follows this notion as it is not changed at all from the album version. If it was to be the main attraction, it would have been a bit more prominent on the cd (like "Professional Widow" single or the dance version of the "Jackie's Strength" single).
The cd only has four tracks. The first of which is "God." It is the lp version, and contains no surprises. The second track is a wistful rendition of "Home on the Range" subtitled "Cherokee Edition." It is the definitive Tori cover. Containing lyrics I had never heard in any version of "Home on the Range," this song brought me to question the validity of the statement--"Home on the Range." I almost felt guilty. The third and fourth tracks comprise a piano suite that really is the highlight of this single. "All the Girls Hate Her" and "Over It" join forces to send their listeners into deep introspection. I have yet to find anything as moving. If you listen to it right/wrong, you'll cry.
