twinpeaks15's Full Review: Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos
know that my title is a bit extreme, but it's true. Of all the debut albums I've heard, none has ever come close to being as shocking or brilliant as this one. Debuts from Alicia Keys and Norah Jones may shake the Grammys, but this will shake your soul.
I also realize I'm not contributing much new to the party here. This album already has 105 great reviews, so why contribute? Because this album has changed my life so much (yes, it actually changed my life) that I would be doing Tori and her genius a great disservice by not commenting on it.
We all have darker moods occasionally, but often times don't know how to express them or release them as we've programmed them out. After hearing this album, a flood emotions overcame me that I didn't know could be released. This is why Tori Amos is a master songwriter and conveyer of intense emotion.
At least half of the tracks on this album are instant classics. Others reveal their brilliance over time, but each is a distinguished jewel that shines brightly over nearly all other compositions of the 90's. And to think it's just her debut!
"Precious Things" finds Tori violently angry and disturbed with shock lyrics like "So you can make me c**/that doesn't make you Jesus". The piano in this song makes you feel her anger so strongly you fear your heart might jump out of your throat.
"Crucify" denounces the torture organized religion can induce upon confused people, and never has this oft-felt, infrequently-discussed topic been developed so completely. Her voice reverberates with the pain that has been forced upon her.
Everything about this album helps to form the perfect debut. Even the album's art work couldn't suit the album better. If you love the unconventional and the true, then please, seek out this album and let it take you on the emotional trip it took me.
