mychele's Full Review: Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos
I bought this album after seeing the haunting redhead on MTV, back when MTV actually showed music. Well, at least they tended to show music really late at night.
This album was probably the most totally satisfying musical experience I've ever had. You know how you might see an artist on TV or hear one of their songs on the radio, and then you get the album and THAT song is the only good one? Not so with Little Earthquakes. Every song is powerful, every song inspires some kind of deep emotion, every song finds some part of me and pushes all the right buttons. Still to this day, I can play L.E. over and over on my CD player and never get tired of it.
I enjoy Tori Amos best in live performance, but this album to me is her all time best as a total package. The only other artists I can think of to compare her to would be maybe Kate Bush, mixed with Elliot Smith, and a dash of Sam Phillips. Chances are, you haven't heard of either of the last two artists, but if you are a Tori lover, you should give them a listen. Their styles are certainly not copies of one another, but there is something about the emotion each performer brings out, the passion, and THAT is what makes these artists so power and transforming. As soon as my friend M.C. Brennan makes a CD of her greatest hits, I'll add her to this list as well.
If you have just enough money for one Tori Amos album, hands down, it's got to be Little Earthquakes.
