t-rexfreak's Full Review: Angel Witch [Remaster] by Angel Witch
Angelwitch was formed back in 1977 by Kevin Heybourne. After having secured a record contract with EMI ltd,the band believed success was at hand.It wasn't.The EMI execs backed out on the contract, after their debut single"Sweet Danger" failed to receive any major radio airplay. That throwback didn't really dampen the spirit of the band, since their debut album "Angel Witch"(which was released on Bronze Records, and marketed by Polygram) contained their Best Stuff.A compilation of 10 masterpieces, bar none. From the ferocious attack of the title track,to the sublime and positively eerie gloom of "White Witch",this album is a celebration of all things metal. The musical influences aren't scattered all over the map,and are rather easy to trace:Early day Rainbow,Black Sabbath,Judas Priest are some of the names whose influences can be heard on this album.Other standouts include the wonderful "sorceress",the catchy "Sweet Danger",the riveting "Angel of Death",as well as the unabashedly dramatic "Free Man".NWOBHM never sounded more concise or controlled as it did on "Angel Witch".The production is excellent, with a tight, controlled sound on the rhythm section, which brings Heybourne's guitar to the front of AngelWitch's relentless musical assault.Delve deeply into the tracks of this album and you may discover a handful of sonic surprises.Given the context of the era(other bands, like Maiden, early day Leppard, saxon etc),this album is remarkably written and impeccably produced. One of the finest hours of not only NWOBHM,but of the 80's metal in general.Had they a good management team,it is not unlikely that they would have made it to the top alongside the more commercial Leppard or the wildcards Iron Maiden.
