adamldemarco's Full Review: Offering [EP] * by Animal Bag
We all have our favorite bands. We all have our favorite CDs where almost every song is great. But on RARE occasion, a CD comes along that could appeal to almost every listening taste, and furthermore has not ONE song you wish to skip. Animal Bag's "Offering" EP is one of these very rare and under-appreciated finds.
I was completely unsurprised to see I'm the only person to rate Animal Bag's second (of three) releases. The first, Animal Bag, is a semi-classic/stoner rock collection. The third (impossibly hard to find both in record stores and the back of my closet) was their attempt to change their image to a hard-edged metal band. But in the middle was a blissful, acoustic offering called... "Offering." I'm not pushing Animal Bag on you; for all I know they don't even exist anymore. But I'm willing to bet there's an "Offering" CD sitting in your local store's bargain bin, and you'd be elated to relax to its seven easy going, harmonious, groooooovy tunes. As they say in the limited liner-notes, "The music on this EP 'offers' a glimpse of one of the many faces of Animal Bag."
All songs are acoustic with light electric accompaniment. All songs contain great instrumental and vocal melody and harmonies. They're all relaxing. All lyrics are stirring, whether empathizing with a reluctant relationship with the slow strains of "If I..." or hearkening back to childhood with the upbeat and tribal-sounding "Mother". Included is also a cover of "Wooden Ships" by Crosby, Stills, and Nash, as well as a cover of their own middle-eastern tinted song from the first album called "Last One." The other three songs include an elegant, music-box-esque instrumental "Moment," the gaelic hints in "Dun Ringill" named after the broch in Scotland, and finally inspiring "Tom."
There you have it- seven wonderful songs that would appeal to virtually every audience. If you enjoy any kind of relaxing rock whether it be the Eagles, Zepplin, Dave Matthews, CSN (obviously, considering they elected to cover "Wooden Ships"), or even perhaps Randy Travis (if you think you'd like to ease into something less country)... I HIGHLY suggest this album.
I'm rarely willing to guarantee readers would definitely enjoy anything I criticize, but if any of this description appealed to you, they yes- I'm willing to guarantee you'll find it worth the purchase the next time you sit down with a loved one and a bottle of wine, or a relaxing chill-session with friends, or just while easing off to sleep. Give "Offering" a shot; I'm willing to bet at least THIS Animal Bag album will also be YOUR bag.
Incidentally, I criticized this album while listening to it. The critique is finished, but "Offering" will play on.
