Freak369's Full Review: Black Lodge [Maxi Single] by Anthrax
A true fan must have this
If you have access to a record broker or import dealer and consider yourself a die-hard Anthrax fan then is the ultimate release that you must have for your collection.
This CD contains four tracks – but four powerful tracks. What is even more dynamic than the enhanced and remixed songs are the people who came together to work this release. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, of Kiss fame, contributed vocals, lyrics and guitar work on Love Her All I Can. Dave Gerden added his wealth of knowledge in the mixing department as well as Al Jourgensen re-mixing Black Lodge.
If you saw my previous review of Sound of White Noise you know my absolute love of the song Black Lodge. Finding this CD was an amazing thing since the two versions are stunning. This particular release is limited to 9,999 copies. The first 100 copies were reserved for band members, promos and gifts. No record stations were sent this limited edition since it would have eaten up at least 4,000 copies. If you come across one higher than 9,999 it is a fake – however if you find one between 1 and 100 you might have hit pay dirt
Black Lodge [first song]
This was the standard release – also called the edited version – that appeared on Sound of White Noise. I did notice that when I played them both at the same time this version did sound clearer and played just a few seconds ahead of the original version.
Black Lodge [second song]
This is the black strings mix and runs 5:20, almost a full minute longer than the original version. You can tell the difference almost immediately; the string section is completely enhanced. Though the entire song the string section is dark and gives this song a uniquely sinister feeling. You can also hear the addition of another acoustic guitar. John Bush’s vocals were rerecorded for this version and are – in my opinion – better than the original cut. If you want to really experience this song in all it’s glory then headphones are a must. You can’t fully appreciate this track through speakers – no matter how loud you crank it.
Potters Field
This is a classic HypoLux remix. The on board engineer is Critter from Chicago Trax Studios; best known for his hip hop / trance releases in the mid 90’s. This version of Potters Field contains some of the best vocal tracks John Bush ever recorded. This set of vocals was also re-recorded for this release – and Mr. Bush belts it out with an extreme fury. The truth behind the re-recorded vocals is this – they were sung through a cellular phone to get the gritty feel. Regardless – the technique works. Three extra guitar pieces were added as well; all by Dan Spitz. This has a real hard edge to it – perfect when you need to really release some pent up energy.
Love Her All I Can
This is an awesome cut – but – on the CD it says that Gene Simmons provided lead vocals. Wrong. John Bush has lead vocals on this – Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley provided backing vocals. Paul Stanley did write the song – which appears in this format on no other recording. The proceeds of Love Her All I Can are all being donated to the Pediatric AIDS Foundation to further research for a cure.
Love her all I can, and try and understand
The things that made her mad, the things that made her sad
I’m a lucky guy I hardly ever cry – and when the world looks bad she’s never ever sad
She’s so easy to please – and it doesn’t take money
How To Spot The Fake
The best way to spot a fake copy of this is to look at the bottom left hand corner – the numbers, which should range from 100 through 9,999, should be black on a light blue background. Most fakes are on a white background.
The Black Lodge Logo should be red [the word black] and white [the word lodge]. Most fakes are all white or all red.
The back of the jewel case should have an etched gold Anthrax logo; this is the one thing most people don’t know about or realize when buying this import. The logo should be the same size as the logo on the front jacket.
Why make so many fake copies of this release? Simply because of the fanatics that are willing to pay big bucks for songs they love. With the addition of Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons on Love Her All I Can the bootleggers were able to target two sets of fans.
You should pay no more than $15.00 USD for this release. If someone is claiming it is worth more then ask them why. Most times they won’t have an answer – then you can walk away laughing knowing you got the best of them.
Now, set forth on your journey to find this CD. Thanks for the read…..

Bonus!!!
Inside the CD jacket you’ll find two Anthrax stickers – both have the black and white static background – one is the Anthrax logo in red and the other is the Sound of White Noise album cover design in puke green. Both of them are printed on JAC paper and are non-permanent – they can be removed and stuck somewhere else. After seven years they are still in perfect condition – no bleed through and no discoloration.
