roynyr's Full Review: Check Your Head by Beastie Boys
This 1992 album release, Check Your Head, is another great effort from my absolutely hands down favorite group, The Beastie Boys. It was created at a time when many critics and neighsayers in the musical community were down on them, claiming that they had reached their peaks musically and creatively. Oh, how they were wrong. This album is classic Beastie Boys. It has the hard beats and rhythms which are symbolic of their style.
This group is symbolic and the preminent force ( in my opinion ) of the rise of hip-hop in the late 1980's and early 1990's and this release is the perfect example of what their style is all about. The music is hard yet intrinsically created to generate emotions from the listener. It contains some vulgarity as well but unlike most of the current rap and hip-hop out there it does not at all detract from the musical creations. This is music that makes you think. Its words, strung together create strength in message like links in a chain.
It is very hard to put into words the sound of the Beastie Boys. Either you are fan or not of them, either you love it or hate it. I am in the latter category.
Some of the best songs on Check Your Head include the following :
* Pass the Mic - Probably the best one on the whole thing. Tremendous flow and the perfect song for just cruising around or for just hanging out. It has a great sound and it is Beastie Boys at their best. On my tape that I created of my favorite BB songs, this one has a spot.
* Something's Got to Give - Another great one, that is classic Beastie Boys sound once again.
* The Maestro - Tremendous sounding song.
Overall, Check Your Head is another of the great albums put out by The Beastie Boys.
