MMT (Reply to this comment)
by brendan2
I agree some of the songs on here just aren't the Beatles best. The reason this album is so full of random songs is because only six songs are from the movie and the rest were just singles thrown in to make a full album of songs. I like pretty much all the songs on here, but I understand why you're not such a big fan of it. Nice work on the review.

the tomato clears up some Beatles trivia mentioned in the thread... (Reply to this comment)

[nitpick]
I'd point to Revolver and Tomorrow Never Knows as the first psychedelia song they published.
and Sgt. Pepper was released before MMT:
Sgt Pepper - June 1 in the UK, June 2 in the US
MMT - November 1 in the US, and not in it's entire album format until 1976 in the UK

Great write up, like usual.
I have to agree with one of the comments below - it's not that Magical Mystery Tour is a mediocre album, it's just a mediocre Beatles album... which is still remarkably better than most albums by other people.
And just for the record, I detest Blue Jay Way.
Also, I was pretty sure that MMT actually came out before Sgt. Pepper... at least that is how it's portrayed on the Beatles Anthology. I'm pretty sure that MMT was their first dabble in psychadelia.
Anyway, great review!

This is starting to sound like a humorous and entertaining blog of some sort. And I have to say, I can't deal with Elvis much. But I consider Exile on Main Street to be in the top ten rock albums of all time. I also think it was about their pure artistic peak.
So yeah interesting stuff....but you are right, the theory just doesn't fit.
biiiiitchin' review though...

re: the Beatles. I know why they were elevated to god status, but I just can't fawn over them. You are a fantastic writer!

See, your theory just doesn't work for me. Why? Well, because I love the STONES and could just do without Elvis. In Tarantino's theory, well, I just don't fit!
Thanks for the comment, Chad.

Not a bad review - and I think Tarantino was wrong, it isn't Elvis fans or Beatles fans, it is Stones fans or Beatles fans.
I don't know. I tend to subscribe to his theory. I really love the Beatles and love the Stones. However, I'm pretty indifferent to Elvis. That is to say I respect him, but don't really dig the music. Oh well.
I'm also a pretty big fan of MMT. When it works, it works wonderfully. When it doesn't, it really doesn't. I just think the times when it works outshine the other parts.
Excellent review as always.

Thanks so much for the comment. To me, well, the arrangement is sort of common knowledge. I personally wouldnt' know if I wasn't so much "into music." If you'd caught me a few years ago I'd have been relatively clueless. Hence my inclusion (if that makes any sense at all).
Glad to hear I'm not completely off-base about what I assumed regarding this album. It's just not a favorite.

Nice Review (Reply to this comment)
by jbsassypants
My hubby is an avid Beatles fan. He always remarks that MMT on its own merits is a very good album. Any one album of all original material that contains no fewer than six tracks that garner significant radio airplay - almost 40 years after its release, and become rock classics, can't be all that bad. It's when MMT is compared to the rest of The Beatles' catalogue that it loses some of it's luster.
Having said that, I don't know of many, if any, Beatles fans that list MMT as their favorite album - or even in their top three. And that is a testament to just how good the Beatles were.
You do a good job of covering the bases with this review. Although I'm not sure it's necessary to point out the Lennon/McCartney songwriting arrangement. I think it's pretty much common knowledge by now. Good review from a Stoner.

Thanks all three of you for your comments. From what I can gather *most* (obviously not ALL) Bealtes fans look elsewhere for joy.
Of could be absolutely off base there as I am of the Rolling Stone variety...

How to scrub bad Beatles movie memories - watch a good Beatles movie, like A Hard Day's Night, or Yellow Submarine ("are you...Blue-ish?")
great job here, Shelly! your point about the difference between popularity and quality is on the money. Revolver is the start of the hig-quality phase while they still retained their early "fab"-ness
just for the record, I can't stand Magical Mystery Tour, relative to the rest of their body of work.

You aren't kidding about the movie project of Magical Mystery Tour being a horrible failure. Talk about your self-indulgent tripe with nothing redeeming to offer. Still, the album ain't bad, and you've nailed its mixture of successes and failures pretty well. Now if I could only scrub the memories of the movie out of my mind...

surprised? I didn't think probably....anyway, part of it for me was having this album as a child. I listened to it when it first came out, again and again and over and over. Your Mother Should Know always made me cry when I was little.
Yeah, I know, I was never little....okay.
Not a bad review - and I think Tarantino was wrong, it isn't Elvis fans or Beatles fans, it is Stones fans or Beatles fans.
just my view
