i've enjoyed these tracks as much as the next... however, i have to admit, i've never owned this album. at the time, everybody owned a copy (and my very strict parents weren't having it). okay, i've been living on my own for years and there's no reason why i shouldn't have a copy.... your review made me feel guilty! but i still got love for K! :)

Thanks so much for this explanation. It's helpful. Good point about rock, blues, and jazz having originated with African Americans as well. I guess I just believe that somehow racism influences the marketing and acceptance or appreciation of music, and I just don't know enough music history to know how it's been affected by racism.

I suppose there's little market for any socially conscious music nowadays - which I mean as an observation, not a justification.

Boy, this whole discussion really has me wondering now about the music of various ethnic groups (Latino, celtic, Afro-pop for example) and the appeal (or lack thereof) to other ethnic groups. I may be overly suspicious of the influence of racism, but it sure is interesting to think about.

Thanks!

Cool. Here's a little clarification.

"Rap" is the music. Spoken words over drum bass hooks is the general definition.

"Hip Hop" is the culture surrounding the music. The four major elements of Hip Hop are Breakdancing, Graffiti, Emceeimg (Rap), and Deejaying. The minor elements are stuff like the slang, apparel, etc.

The same way the term "Punk" can denote a culture as well as a music genre, Hip Hop can mean both the music and the culture. There was a distinction between the two early in Rap's history, but over the years, it's become OK to refer to the music as hip hop. Does that help? Clear as mud?

I don't think that white folks are saying (implicitly or explicitly) that they don't like music by African Americans when they say they 'don't like rap', simply because rock, blues, and jazz were originated by blacks as well, and there are white folks who know much more about those genres than I do (check some jazz reviews by mike.holmes), and I'm no slouch.

It's been said that Rap is Black people's Heavy Metal, so it's naturally going to be harder and more raw than other forms of music. Some people just don't like edgier (is that a word?) music.

And remember, rock, blues, and jazz were not exactly wildly popular when they first came out either.

Great question, by the way. -mad

...nice hat. Great review--if I were to decide to purchase a CD that would show me the heart and soul of hip-hop, sounds like this would be the one you'd recommend.

Your review makes me want to run right out to the music store to get this one!

I have to admit that I'm left somewhat confused about the apparently interchangeable use of "rap" and "hip hop" in your review. I am tired as I read this, so it you made a better distinction than I'm picking up, my apologies. ;)

I bring it up because I got to thinking: if rap and hip-hop aren't completely different genres, why do we use different words? Is "rap" too "Black"? Do we white folk buy more hip hop than rap albums? "Hip hop" certainly sounds happier than "rap."

I mean for this comment to reflect negatively on white folk, who are so quick to say "Oh, I like all kinds of music - except rap." Are they (we) really saying "I don't care for music by African Americans," but in some kind of code language?

I get disturbed sometimes listening to rap, but only because my brain cannot absorb the reality of how quickly some people are able to remember and perform complicated lyrics. It's the same disturbing feeling I get watching claymation - it's upsetting only because I can't figure out how it's done!

Thanks for providing such great food for thought!

I remember! KRS was standing in front of a jeep(?) reciting the first few lines of "My Philosophy" a capella. I miss Yo! MTV Raps. Direct Effect is crap and Rap City has seriously declined. -mad

I remember waaaay back when Yo MTV raps was only 30 minutes long and only on once a week. "My philosophy" was one of the first rap videos that I had seen on that show and I knew that I had to have the album. It still stands up to any rap record and I can say that about KRS as a whole as well.
