Pros:BEYOND AMAZING! MUSIC PERFECTION
Cons:Never to be reproduced again
The Bottom Line: BUY THIS ALBUM IF YOU LIKE MUSICAL PERFECTION
Okay, here goes... I am a guitarist... and when that first album was released, I practically wore the frets off my guitar trying to learn it. 37 years later, I'm still working on it, but I have most of the chops down now. I just wish I could afford the equipment; the Marshall stacks, the Eventide Harmonizers, and all the other racks of goodies Tom used to produce his awesome tone.

I started playing guitar in '74, but when I heard Boston's first album in '76, that's when I really became a musician! I just could not believe my ears. What Tom Scholz had mastered in his basement in Wayland, MA is nothing less than rock & roll perfection. PERIOD! Each one of his songs is truly a masterpiece because every little nuance has been crafted into a work of art. Tom's creamy melodic white-hot rippin' guitar sound and that killer monster Hammond organ sound are unmistakable Boston traits, but unfortunately those tones will never be reproduced to this day, at least by Boston. Ugh!
My Advice is:
1. BUY THE FIRST ALBUM,
2. KNOW THE FIRST ALBUM,
3. LIVE THE FIRST ALBUM,
4. DON'T WASTE TIME WONDERING WHY ALL THE OTHER BOSTON ALBUMS AREN'T AS GOOD,
5. FOLLOW STEPS 1-3 AGAIN.
AND NOW... A RATHER "DIRECT" COMMENTARY...
So I ask you, Tom, what's the friken deal? Why haven't you been able to recapture the magical sounds and content of the first album? Is it because Barry was a major part of it... Well sure, but I still think you owe your loyal fans (especially me) either an answer or an album of equal or better quality. What happened to the ultra-janglee 12 string guitar lick which turns into the creamy white hot electric guitar solo in MTAF? Where's that God-like Hammond C3 sound from Smokin' which stemmed from Hocus Pocus by Focus? What about the fans cheering in R&R Band, and those hand claps and tambourines?
Look, forget all the ridicules law suits, bad feelings with x-group members and Dunlop deals AND GET ON WITH IT! And no breaking your finger playing basket ball to get out of this one.
I'm gettin' older here!
PLEASE MAKE THE MAGIC HAPPEN AGAIN SOON!
The Gee-tah Guy
UPDATE 2011; I'm so sorry to hear of Brad's passing. He was a truly wonderful and unique person.
UPDATE 2013; I think I now know what the problem is. ME! It's my fault for still expecting anything. While Tom Scholz is obviously a great producer, the last thing he can be expected to do is produce his art under any kind of pressure or schedule.
Do it when it works for you Tom. Don't rush it. Find a singer that can make Brad proud. I'll wait.
