| thetoolsofwar's Full Review: Forest of Equilibrium by Cathedral |
I remember reading a review that elected Cathedral's album "Forest of Equilibrium" as the Heaviest Album of 1992. They were probably right. If you're a Black Sabbath fan particularly, or a doom'n'gloom metal fan in general, you should check this one out. Slow, somber dirges are the one and only theme here--the fastest song on the album, "Soul Sacrifice", is about the same pace as most mid-tempo rock. But O Lord is it heavy! Consider heaviness in these terms: as Judas Priest is to Mariah Carey, so is Cathedral to Judas Priest. These songs remind me a lot of Black Sabbath's Vol. 4 album, particularly songs like "Cornucopia" and "St.Vitus' Dance." Except for one thing: they're generally not as well-composed as Sabbath, or as catchy as Judas Priest's metal anthems. Two songs clearly stand out as my favorites among the seven on the album: "Serpent's Eve" and "Soul Sacrifice." Only one song really bothers me, and that's because it has a flute in it and the production sounds awkward, IMO. Jethro Tull it's not; leave the flute to them! My other complaint is that there are only seven songs on the CD, but they're all fairly long so I don't really feel short-changed. If you're into sharply down-tuned guitars, droning vocals, and funeral songs, this album is for you. Just make sure you've got decent bass on your stereo so you can really appreciate it. One side note: I read an interview with the band that said they really just wanted to play 70's rock...I think that statement is about the equivalent of Chrysler advertising the '77 Cordoba (two tons with a big-block V8, very plush interior) as "The Small Chrysler"--who are they trying to kid?
