| tanyajanke's Full Review: D?j? Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young |
I have just recently discovered this wonder, thanks to my significant other who is a bit of an oldie himself. As a twenty-something, "Crosby Stills Nash and Young" was just random phrase from the oldie stations, and I had never heard of "Deja Vu" though the cover was vaguely familiar.
I am a huge, though not particularly knowledgeable, oldies fan and have been all my life, but the only song from this album that was familiar to me was "Our House." This is far from my favorite, as I find it more reminiscent of my Dentist's office than anything else. Our House may be the best known song from Deja Vu, but it is far from the best in my opinion.
Now, "Woodstock" I could listen to repeatedly and never tire of it. I am a big 'ol Joni Mitchell fan, so I wasn't surprised when I read in the liner notes that this is a song of hers. My significant other highly recommended Teach Your Children Well when he bought this CD for me, but all I can say is: Gag me with a spoon! (I'm becoming nostalgic for my own 1980s youth) I find this song sappy and overly sentimental, like a bad Julia Roberts movie.
The rest of the tracks, including Deja Vu itself, meld together in my mind to form one incredible, sometimes trippy album. The sound quality is great and the only problem I have with this CD is that I wish it were longer! A few added tracks would have been much appreciated.
Deja Vu succeeds in transporting me back to a time I never knew: The epitome of Postmodern Nostalgia. For those who appreciated this album as a record, it's probably time to start appreciating it as a CD.
