fiona32's Full Review: An Evening With John Denver [Remaster] by John Den...
Steve,
Thanks for this review. It brought tears, but that's OK. I have this CD, and every one John Denver ever made. And duplicates of most on tape, to play while driving. Like you, when I just plain need to feel good, more than any other music I own, John Denver is the choice. As I just read your review, I grabbed for the same CD to put on. Its still hard to believe I won't be seeing him again in concert. I've probably had that indescribable experience about 15 times. I remember having my daughters stand in line at 7 a.m. at Wings Stadium here in Kalamazoo about l8 years ago (they were teenagers), so we would have good tickets. AND, I remember sitting in Olympia Stadium in Detroit, 28 years ago, with these same daughters on my lap, wet diapers and all, in the first row, falling in love with this man's spirit and joy.
Like you, I became a fan, (to say the least), in the early 70's. I watched him grow, in talent, and as a person - with serious concerns about our planet and what affects our lives...he brought great joy, awareness, love, to many people. You either liked him or you didn't. And for me it definitely wasn't just about the quality of his singing, which went from pure and ethereal, to down-home folksy, but the quality of the man, as he grew.
I regarded him as one of my teachers, and still do - and his loss was deeply felt. Its still hard to think about his death. One of his lesser-known songs, "The Wings That Fly Me Home" was our choice for my wedding - MANY years ago. I guess I'd have to say many of the words to his songs I saw as prayers - and they had a permanent effect on my life, and who I am today. From reading his autobiography and other information, I know he had an alcohol problem, but (even as a former substance abuse therapist), I did not see it affecting his efforts to make the world a better place. He died, as my 10 year old grandson said to me, the morning after that tragic news, doing what he most loved - soaring above the earth he loved with every fiber of his being. Godspeed, John Denver. We know you're still with us.
