JENNI1396's Full Review: Dirty Dancing by Original Soundtrack
I haven't watched the movie Dirty Dancing in a few years, but I still remember the story and the music. The “Dirty Dancing Soundtrack” is full of wonderful songs that make you want to watch the movie over and over again.
What woman doesn’t like the story of a nice girl who falls for a bad boy? When Baby Houseman goes to the Catskills with her family for the summer, she never thought she would find love. When Baby Houseman meets Johnny Castle, a dance instructor, and he teaches her to “dirty” dance they soon fall in love. Things heat up when Johnny’s dance partner backs out leaving him a solo act. In steps Baby and the two steal the show.

The song “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” is the love theme for the movie. Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes perform this beautiful love song. The lyrics are wonderful and the music background is beautiful. “I’ve had the time of my life, No I never felt this way before, Yes I swear it’s the truth, And I owe it all to you”. Even Jennifer and Patrick lip sync this song in the movie, they don’t do a great job of it, but it is still a beautiful song. This song is one timeless classic no Dirty Dancing fan should go with hearing.
The song “Be My Baby” is an oldie but goodie. The Ronettes performed “Be My Baby” in 1963. The song has a great beat, and lyrics. “Be my, be my baby, Be my little baby, My one and only baby, Say you’ll be my darling”. For an old classic this is a wonderful song and addition to the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack.
The song “She’s Like The Wind” performed by Patrick Swayze himself is a beautiful love song. The lyrics and background music are wonderful. You can tell Patrick puts so much passion into this song. Patrick has done a wonderful job with it. It is another great addition to the soundtrack. “Feel your breath on my face, Her body close to me, Can’t look in her eyes, She’s out of my league, Just a fool to believe, I have anything she needs, She’s like the wind”. The background vocals performed by Wendy Fraser are just as great. The song starts out slow and picks up the pace towards the end, making it a beautifully blended song.
Another one of my favorite songs is “Hungry Eyes”, performed by Eric Carmen. It is a beautiful love song with a fast pace and wonderful beat. The lyrics are wonderful and the instrumental solo is great. “With these hungry eyes, One look at you and I can’t disguise, I’ve got hungry eyes, I feel the magic between you and I”.
The song “Stay” is another old song on the album. Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs performed this short but sweet song in the 1960’s. This song is for all those who like the songs of the good ‘ole days. The beat is nice and the instrumental parts are ok. “Stay just a little bit longer, Please, please, please, please, please, Tell me you’re going to”.
Merry Clayton performs the song “Yes”. Even though it was performed in 1987, it has the sounds of The Supremes much older songs mixed in. It does have a great beat and instrumental background. This song makes you remember the days of the 50’s diners, and drive in movies. “Yes, We’re gonna fall in love and it feels so right, Yes We’re gonna make love, It’s gonna be tonight I can just imagine, huggin’ and teasin’ and lovin’ and squeezin’ all night”.
The Blow Monkeys performed the song “You Don’t Own Me” in 1963. The lyrics are great and the jazz musical solo is wonderful. Some might remember this song in the movie “First Wives’ Club” it was performed at the end by the 3 main characters. “Don’t tell me what to do and don’t tell me what to say, Please when I go out with you, don’t put me on display”.
Bruce Channel performed the song “Hey Baby” in 1961. This is another song that brings you back to the good ‘ole days of being young and in love. This is not one of my favorite songs on the album, but it is a good addition to a wonderful album. “Hey, hey baby I wanna know, If you’ll be my girl, When I saw you walking down the street, I said that’s the kind of gal I’d like to meet”.
Zappacosta performs the song “Overload”. It has a great beat, lyrics and background vocals. It kind of reminds me of a ZZ Top song. “You got me on my knees, I burn throughout the night and I can’t live without your love, won’t you help me cure this overload”.
Mickey and Sylvia performed the song “Love Is Strange” in 1956. I remember the scene in Dirty Dancing when Baby and Johnny are lip-syncing this song to each other. The lyrics are ok, and the instrumental background is alright. This is not one of my favorites. They do more talking then singing for this song. “Sylvia, yes, Mickey, How do you call your lover boy, Come here lover boy, and if he still doesn’t answer, Oh lover boy, And if he still doesn’t answer, I simply say Baby, oh baby My, sweet baby you’re the one”.
“Where Are You Tonight?” is another song that I don’t care for. It has a nice beat (it is to slow for my taste) and lovely lyrics. The song is just to boring for me. Tom Johnson performed the song in 1987. “I want to know, where are you tonight, I got to know where are you tonight”.
The Satins performed the song “In The Still Of The Night” in 1956. This is a wonderful classic of the good ‘ole days. I’m sure this song was a popular love song back then for teenagers in love. The music and lyrics are great. “In the still of the night, I held you, held you tight “cause I love you so, promise I’ll never let you go, in the still of the night”. This song is a great addition to the album.
I recommend the “Dirty Dancing Soundtrack” to young and old alike. There are songs that will bring back memories of days gone by to the older crowd and songs that the younger crowd will enjoy. The music is great and so is the movie. If you like the movie, you will love the soundtrack.
