Speaking as a casual Dylan fan... (Reply to this comment)
by jeff_wilder78
I get where you're coming from. Dylan was always one of those artists I tend to admire more than really get excited about. I own 5 albums by the man (as with Paul, Highway 61 is one of them and I definitely agree on those who recommended Blood On The Tracks) and I like all of them. But once a week is my maximum dosage of Dylan.
Great review

If You Want More Dylan... (Reply to this comment)

you really can't go wrong picking up any album he made in the 60's. Or any album he has made in his 60's.
I think you're right about "Blowin' in the Wind." It sounds like an anti-war song, but I believe it was written in support of the civil rights movement.
Funny that you describe "Positively 4th Street" as upbeat because Dylan called it one of the most bitter songs he has ever penned. Listening to the words, it is hard to tell if he is dismissing a former love, or singing about himself.

Thank you!
I must admit that I didn't realize that your review was an entry until looking at Paul's profile. Apologies--I didn't mean to steal your thunder!
Thanks for stopping by (and offering up suggestions).
Shelly.

Thank you, Paul, for summing it all up for me. I actually have the non-remastered version (which I didn't mention because, uh, it isn't all that important to me) and really don't intend on getting another album. Maybe I'll pick up another Greatest Hits, but maybe not.
;)
Shelly.
Still not a major Dylan lover. Just a modest fan.

Heya... (Reply to this comment)

Like you, I'm not much of a Dylan aficionado. I only picked up this album (before it was re-mastered, by in my freshman year in college) for "Like a Rolling Stone". Then, a couple years ago, when Sony finally started remastering his catalog, I sold my, by then, pretty roughed up copy with the intention of eventually filling out my collection. After all, at a certain point, you can't have a collection of 2500 CDs with, like, ten studio albums by Kool and the Gang, not to mention the complete studio output of Level 42, and then only a measly "Greatest Hits" to cover the Dylan. It's just not right.
Still, in the two years since, (and mind you, I have seven - SEVEN studio albums by Air Supply, most out-of-print) I haven't purchased a single Bob Dylan album, remastered or otherwise. Until two days ago. I spent 7 bucks to pick up the remastered version of 'Highway 61 Revisited'. I played "Like a Rolling Stone" a couple times on the way home in my car before switching it out to listen to Men Without Hats's last studio "...In the 21st Century", which I'd also just picked up.
And I can honestly say, I enjoyed Men Without Hats just a little bit more.
Moral of this long and apparently pointless story:
Important music isn't always a sound financial investment.

Its nice to see another entry into Paul's write-off, they've all been pretty good. And even though I wrote about it for the w/o, it's great to see someone else's opinion on it (good quality descriptive reviews on this specific compilation have been scarse).
Anyway, I enjoyed your review. I notice you said this was the only Dylan in your whole collection. If you want some recommendations from me, I'll help ya. I just became a big Dylan fan last year, but I've been grabbing his albums left and right. My personal recommendation would be "Blood on the Tracks". A lot of people say it's his best album ever. I haven't heard all his albums so I can't make that claim, BUT it IS the best out of all his albums I've heard so far.
Keep up the good work man!
Peace
