I have wanted to see Fantasia 2000 since I first saw previews for it late last year. There is an IMAX theatre near me and I kept putting it off. I almost waited too long, as this "special engagement" ends tomorrow! Anyway, my friend and I took my daughter to see it today. It was somewhat costly, at $27.50 for the three of us, but the experience was worth it.
First off, let me say that I enjoy classical music. No, it is not my choice for everyday listening, but in features like this one, I absolutely relish it. I have loved the original Fantasia since I first saw it, as a teen. Fantasia 2000, in my opinion is even better than the first. Of course, the beloved Sorcerer's Apprentice remained from the original feature. It was like watching it anew because I had only seen it on video before. Seeing it for the first time on a truly huge screen was a unique experience!
Fantasia 2000 features scores by Gershwin, Beethoven, Saint-Saens, Stravinsky and Shostakovich; performed by the Chicago Symphony orchestra. The new sections are fantastic! The sections include: a short intro with butterflies, followed by a section with whales, an interesting hand-drawn piece on New York (to Rhapsody in Blue), the Tin Soldier, Donald Duck in Noah’s Ark, and flamingoes with yo-yos dancing wildly. There is also a piece which highlights "life, death, and renewal." Each piece is introduced by various actors, such as: Steve Martin, Bette Midler, James Earl Jones, and Angela Landsbury.
If you don't like classical music, you might want to skip this feature. I say might because I believe that anyone can enjoy this feature. It is just astonishing to watch the stories play out to the music. I absolutely loved it. My 7 year-old didn't even get bored! Alas, I believe that tomorrow, in most areas anyway, is the last day to see it in an IMAX theatre. If you have one locally, it really is worth the price for the ability to lose yourself in fantasy for 75 minutes!
