I bought my wife and my 18 month old son "opening day" tickets to see F2000. In retrospect, I can not conceive of a better way to start the New Year. (I would say millenium, but that actually starts next year.)
First off, if you've never seen an IMAX movie, it'll make you wish all movies were filmed in this format. The theater we saw F2000 in is less than a year old, and absolutely first rate. Comfy seats and 12,000 watts of hi-fidelity audio would make any film more enjoyable. But F2000 is not just any film.
I knew in advance some of what to expect. Donald Duck/Noah's Ark/Pomp and Circumstance was just good old animation. Whales/Pines of Rome was Disney's "new" style, i.e., computer generated. Rhapsody in Blue was amazing, saluting Hirschfeld from The New Yorker. As far as animation goes, the most stunning part to me was the Fairie in Stravinsky's Firebird. For anyone interested, Disney based the Phoenix on Mount St. Helen's. I was there in August, and the drawings of the crater looked like my slides from the trip!
Opening with Beethoven's 5th was a throw back to the original Fantasia. The animators filled the screen with abstract images of butterflies and bats. Disney also saluted the original Fantasia by including the Sorceror's Apprentice. I was disappointed that they didn't "redo" it in the IMAX format. While still amazing in it's own right, Sorceror's Apprentice showed just how good the new film technologies are.
If you like Disney, animation, classical music, or just a good case of sensory overload, go see this film. It only runs until the end of April.
