I have never been a great fan of Fantasia, because I don't like the idea of classical music being associated with specific images, but this updated 2000 version was beautifully crafted and contained animation both gorgeous and creative.
The new "Whales" segment effectively showcased impressive state-of-the-art animation capabilities. While the storyline of flying whales didn't appeal to me, I still enjoyed the visual effects.
There was a nice segment based on the Hans Christian Anderson tale "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" that had an appearance similar to Toy Story. As usual, the darker ending of the original tale has been "Disneyfied" to tell a happier story, but it fit well with the tone of the overall movie.
Al Hershfeld's "Rhapsody in Blue" cartoon added appealing originality and variety to the movie. The twists in plot meshed perfectly with changes in the music to tell a tale of life in New York City.
The ending "Firebird" segment was probably the most serious story I've ever seen Disney create, and was a beautiful depiction of nature's recovery following a volcano eruption.
Overall I found Fantasia 2000 to be an enjoyable experience, and perfectly suited to the IMAX format. I would highly recommend seeing it while it is in the theatres.
