| Skaplan's Full Review: Fantasia/2000 |
This latest installment of Fantasia was truly worth the wait. The animation is fantastic and the short stories are very good. The music that was picked to go along with each story made the absence of dialogue a forgotten worry because the music sounded that good.
Many of the pieces are new to this version of Fantasia, although the classic Sorcerer's Apprentice is still one of the highlights of the movie. Each new piece, from Hans Christian Andersen's "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" to an adaptation of Noah's Ark with Donald and Daisy Duck. You don't even have to like classical music, you just have to be a fan of great artwork and then you will love this film.
Unfortunately, you need to have an IMAX theater in your area to see the film. There are not that many around and I heard that it will be released to all theaters this summer, but if you can see it on an IMAX, the sheer size of the screen makes the movie that much better. I saw it on a 5 story tall screen and 90 feet wide!
A drawback from the film for me was that it was so short. Just over an hour long and at $10 a head, I was wondering if it was going to be worth it.
In the end, I thought that it was worth it, but I still found myself wishing it was longer.
As far as the detail of the new artwork, it was flawless. My recommendation to anyone who wants to see this film is to make sure you see it at a theater that has a very good sound system. Otherwise you may miss out on some of the subtle nuances in the music like the chiming of the triangle or the quiet beauty of the flute. The better the theater's sound system, the more you will enjoy this film.
Also, a nice addition was the quality members of the movie screen and musical stage that appeared in the film. People like James Earl Jones, Steve Martin and Bette Midler just to name a few...I'll let you see the others for yourself.
